when do we use the infinitive?

We can use the infinitive or another verb after many verbs: afford, agree, arrange, expect, forget, hope, intend, manage, plan, promise, refuse, seem.

EXAMPLES

  • He intends to start a business next year
(Él tiene la intención de comenzar un negocio el año siguiente)
  • You promised to do this for me
(Tú prometiste hacer esto por mi)
  • I expected to finish my essay today
(Yo esperaba terminar my ensayo hoy)

NOTE that some verbs cannot be followed by an infinitive:

I ENJOY GOING TO THE THEATER

I ENJOY TO GO TO THE THEATER
