SESSION 2: BIKE TRIPPIN'
1. Read the first sentence and try to predict what the document is about.
Why go touring by bicycle?
In these days of light-speed communications, who wants to use the pedals climbing up high hills, carrying a heavy load and end up sleeping in the dark insect-filled woods? Are bicycle tourers and bike-packers a bit masochistic?
I would say ‘Not at all’. Long-distance bicycle camping is a most pleasurable activity. I generally sleep badly at night; but in the woods, I sleep like a baby, lulled by the music of insects. In the morning, I quickly pack my sleeping bag, air mattress, tent, and other gear and get on the road. There are difficult times as well, but to meet interesting people along the way, find beautiful views and wild animals, stopping in meadows, lakes, woods, and historic spots (far from the tourist traps and overlooks) is always exciting to me. Travelling by bike allows me to stop anywhere I want. There’s always a small grocery to buy some bread, sandwich materials, and fruit. In the afternoon, my speeds are higher, and I spend less time at stops. My body feels fantastic. I relish the climbs. I finally find a place in the early evening, cook a simple meal, and rest. As it starts to get dark, I pitch my tent, crawl in, and fall asleep.
But I’m not implying this is the only (or the best) way to do it. When travelling in Quebec, I saw many dozens of non-camping cyclists. Usually, these bike travellers have a limited vacation time to enjoy the beauty of Nature on the bicycle, not in the camp. They plan their trips out carefully to be sure to find a B&B (bed and breakfast), motel, or hostel at the end of every day's ride. They eat their meals in restaurants. Some travel over a hundred miles a day, and others are content with thirty miles or less.
I suppose I could add one other type to the list. Some cyclists have a car, van, or even RV travelling close behind them, with the driver and occupants taking care of their every need. Of course, the motor vehicle ends up driving many more miles than if the person had simply left the bike at home. In my opinion, this is not touring but bicycling with a support vehicle, and I fail to see why the person should be congratulated for crossing the US in this fashion. Of course, I understand that racers and RAAM cyclists get this kind of support, but their trip is hardly a bike tour. In addition, I have met a cyclist with a severe physical disability who was making a once-in-a-lifetime trip with such support, and I was very sympathetic under those circumstances.

STATION 1: .LISTENING ONLINE:
1Tourism 1_____________________a lot over the past few decades. It is actually quite a new thing. It probably 2____________ fifty years ago. The only people who travelled then were rich, and they were called 3________. I guess tourism 4_____ in the late 60s and early 70s when airplane travel became 5_____. The idea of foreign travel suddenly became very 6_____________________. Everyone wanted their two weeks of sun in the summer. Tourism today is a multi-billion-dollar industry. There is hardly a 7_______ of the Earth untouched by tourism. The number of tourists is also 8_______________. Millions of people from Russia, India and China are now taking vacations. Tourism really is making the world a 9_____ village. I’m not sure if this is a 10_____ or a bad thing
https://listenaminute.com/t/tourism.html
STATION 2:Order the paragraphs to form a text:
1- As summer comes near, many children are really happy to forget about school for a few months. However, they might be taking that goal too seriously. Studies have found that children typically forget between one and three months’ worth of school learning during the summer months. 2- Spelling and math abilities suffer the most, while reading is not really influenced by the time off. The most probable reason for this is that most children read at least occasionally outside of the classroom, whether newspapers, magazines, books, or video game guides. However, their math and spelling skills only get exercised in the school setting.
3- The original purpose of summer vacations was to let farm children have time off to help work in the fields in the high growing season, but this reason is no longer valid since fewer kids actually work on farms today. Some cities in the United States, such as Los Angeles, have moved to a year-round school calendar, which may help reduce the academic decline that occurs during the long summer vacation. Most cities maintain the normal nine and a half-month calendars. To improve skills and to maintain a good level of preparation, superintendents recommend trips to museums, summer camps, vacations with educational components, and visits to libraries to keep kids mentally alert and interested throughout the summer.
4- There are other educational systems that provide vacations while still keeping students’ skills sharp. For example, in Japan students attend class for seven weeks consecutively, followed by two weeks of vacation. This continues throughout the year. In Italy, students attend class six days per week, but finish at 1:30 PM each day, so that school does not dominate their life the way that it does in America, where students attend high school from 7:45 AM until 3:00 PM each week day. In areas where there are not enough classrooms—in Afghanistan or Somalia, for example—older students attend classes in the morning while the younger kids go to school in the afternoon. 5- School administrators and educational specialists fear that the three-month summer vacation halts the continuity of learning. Just as students become accustomed to new math equations or new concepts in reading, writing, or critical thinking skills, they “shut down” for an extended period. When they go back to school after the long summer vacation, they take up to two months to return to their previous level of proficiency. And so the debate continues: whether to continue the status-quo in terms of vacations or to seek changes based on the Los Angeles or the Japanese models.

Often, the sites you see when you travel are so new, anxious / unique, or cultural / overwhelmingly beautiful that you may have no words to say. I am often awe-struck / scenery by historical sites, cultural / scenery icons, and cultural / geographic features. But my husband doesn’t come with me because he doesn’t like flying, so he’s quite unique /anxious when we go travelling.

In addition, I have met a cyclist with a severe physical disability who was making a once-in-a-lifetime trip with such support, and I was very sympathetic under those circumstances. https://www.phred.org/~alex/kenkifer/www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/touring/index.htm
2. Which of the statements are true or false? 1) Nowadays, travelling by bike is a crazy activity. T/F2) The presence of insects doesn’t bother the cyclist. T/F3) The risk of falling off the bike is bigger if it’s loaded. T/F4) You don’t need any money to travel by bicycle. T/F5) The cyclist enjoys the climbs very much. T/F6) Everyone who tours by bike enjoy camping. T/F
