WANNACRY

HISTORICAL NOTE

The attack started 12 of May of 2017, infecting more than 230000 computers around 150 countries. The most affected countries were Rusia, Ucrania, India and Taiwan, some parts of NHS from Great Britain, Telefónica from Spain, FedEx, Deutsche Bahn and the airlines LATAM

HOW IT WORKS?

Wannacry works us the others types of crypto-ransomware, it takes data hostage, promising to return it if you pay a ransom. Wannacry targets computers that use Microsoft Window as operating system. It can encrypts the data and demands payment of a ransom in cryptocurrency Bitcoin for its return.

HOW IS IT TRASMITTED?

WHAT KIND OF MALWARE IS?

Wannacry is trasmited or spred via a flaw in the Microsoft Windows implementation of the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. It was an opperation that hunts down vulnerable public fancing SMB and then uses the alleged NSA-leaked EternalBlue to exploit to get on network and then DoublePulsar to establish persistence and allow the installation of the ransomware.

WannaCry is an example of crypto-ransomware, a malware (malicious software) which is used by cybercriminals to extort money.

MEASURES TO AVOID THEIR ATTACK

  • Installing antivirus software:
ensuring it's uo to date with the lastes virus database signatures installed.
  • Updating to the latest Apple or Window operating system:
you get al the necesary security updates and patches.
  • Not oppening any email attachments from unknown senders:
attachements that seem suspucious until you can confirm with the sender which email is legit.
