ADULTS live in swamps, floodplains and river deltas.

They are OMNIVORES.
ADULTS eat mostly mollusks. They also eat small fishes, insects and plant roots.
THE YOUNG ones eat almost exclusively insects.

Their reproduction is SEXUAL.
IN THE FLOOD SEASON the males dig a nest in the mud. The female lay the eggs and the male protect them during 8 WEEKS.

The offspring born with EXTERNAL GILLS but after a few weeks, the GILLS RETRACTS and they start breathing oxygen from the air.
