María Cristina Vilanova was born in 1915, the 15th of January in El Salvador. She was a poet, writer, revolutionary, political activist and the first lady of Guatemala. During her first years, she studied in the United States, especifically in a religious school in California. This part of her education was highly important, as she learnt to speak languages such as English, German and Russian, also helping her develop her intellect and cultural aspect, which later helped her turn the person she became. She met her future husband, Jacobo Árbenz, which she married in 1939 after several years of being a couple. In 1943, Jacobo got promoted to Captain, where he commanded a company of cavalry, which described him as a very good Leader, while Vilanova recurred to sell products in the market in order to save themselves from economic poverty
Biography: Adulthood
During October 1944, a revolution started due to the recent changes made by by the president Jorge Ubico, who militarized schools and exempted the UFCO, the united fruit company from paying taxes. This greatly affected the agrarian bussinesses. During that time, several student organizations were founded, and finally the goverment was overthrown having Juan José Arévalo take the power in 1945. During this time Vilanova was in El Salvador, but after hearing the news, she quickly head back to Guatemala. She then took part in several diplomatic missions, such as meeting Eleanor Roosevelt. Her husband later took the presidency in his own hands and stopped around 36 coups. During the 1950s, as the first lady, she organized several art schools, foundations to help children and etc. She also worked as the translator of Jacobo, who depicted her as the most trustworthy one. Later on, the goverment was overthrown in 1954, period where Arbenz supposedly was demoralized due to the news of his spouse having a lover. They exiled and spent several years travelling to Canada, Russia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Uruguay, Mexico...

Her late life started with them moving to Switzerland, but they had to move again due to the CIA's defamation campaign against Arbenz, which continued until almost the 60s. In 1958, they were invited to live in Cuba by Fidel Castro. There, Árbenz was criticized by el Che Guevara for his response concering the uprising he had suffered. During 1965, at Colombia, her daughter, Arabella, killed herself with a revolver. The following years were spent in Mexico and Paris. Arbenz finally died in 1971, while Vilanova was away attending familiar bussiness. In 1995, his body was returned to Guatemala and was given several awards and titles post-mortem. Her last years were spent protecting and improving her and her family's image. She finally died in 2009, after writing memories and books. After this, the government apologized in 2011 and honored them even further, giving their names to some places, republishing Vilanova's book <<Mi esposo, el presidente Árbenz>> and more. And this is how her life ended, however, her family is still relevant, her son, Jacobo Arbenz Vilanova is now a politician and has had 7 more children. tap/click to zoom in

Vilanova is primarily known for many reasons, she was a poet, writer, painter she was the first lady of Guatemala back then, married Árbenz, greatly influenced the 1940s revolution.. Furthermore, she also recieved a doctorate <<Honoraris causa>> in the name of her husband, alongside several other awards and recognition coming from both the population and the goverment. Even when she died, the Guatemalan goverment offered an official apology and several other awards, as well as a proper funeral and more. Today she still is remembered as a figure who influenced the revolution and got prosecuted until her last years by her opposition.
