Present Continuous

We use the present simple when something is generally or always true. Also we use it for habits or things that we do regularly.

We use present continuous to describe an action that is going on right now.

How to form present simple?

AFFIRMATIVE FORMWe need just the subject + the base form of the verb. We have to add a "S" if the subject is 'he', 'she', or 'it'. Let's try with the verb work

NEGATIVE FORMWe need the subject + DON'T/DOESN'T + the base form of the verb. Let's try with the verb work

INTERROGATIVE FORMWe need DO/DOES + subject + the base form of the verb. Let's try with the verb work

SPELLING CHANGES

Some verbs suffer spelling changes with 'he', 'she' or 'it':

Verbs that end in 'y' often change 'y' to 'ie' before 's':

  • study becomes studies
  • try becomes tries
  • marry becomes marries
  • fly becomes flies
  • cry becomes cries
Be careful! If the verb ends in 'ay', 'ey', 'oy', 'uy', the spelling DOESN'T change. So:
  • play becomes plays
  • say becomes says
  • buy becomes buys
  • enjoy becomes enjoys
  • stay becomes stays

To have is an irregular verb that can be used as a main or auxiliary verb.
