Kenya is the most industrially developed country in East Africa, manufacturing still accounts for only 13% of GDP. Expansion of the sector was initially rapid after independence but has slowed since the 1980s. Import substitution was the official policy in early years, and Kenya quickly developed a number of subsectors with an emphasis on consumer goods
