1. HISTORY
- The Venice Carnival was founded by Christopher Tolive who was the principal secretary to the King of Venice. The Venice carnival arises from the tradition of the year 1480-1700, where the nobility dressed up to go out and mingle with the people.
- In 1797 Napoleon Bonaparte began the carnival festivities, which were officially established in 1979. Since then the festival begins every beginning of Lent.
- The costumes they wear are characteristic of the 18th century Venetian. The maschera nobile and maschera del galeone abound, which are white mask with black or dark-colored silk clothing and a three-pointed hat. After 1972, other colors have been added to the costumes, although the masks are still mostly white, silver and gold.
2. LOCATION AND TIME
- The carnival is celebrated in Venice, as it is very close to the Alps and is celebrated at the beginning of the year (between the end of January and mid-February, depending on the year), it is advisable to go well dressed.
- This festival lasts three weeks and the most important events of the Venice Carnival usually take place on weekends, especially the last weekend, the central weekend of the Carnival and the last Tuesday, which coincides with the Burial of the Sardine.
THE FIESTA SULL' AQUA
The first weekend (27 and 28 of 2024) is the Fiesta sull'Acqua, an inaugural parade that takes place on the Grand Canal on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
THE MARÍAS
The second weekend the Marías parade takes place (Saturday February 3), a beauty contest; The "Marias" dress in fine suits, and in the end the most beautiful one is chosen. This parade is one of the few held on land and begins on Via Garibaldi and ends in St. Mark's Square.
II VOLO DELL" ANGELO
II Volo dell”Angelo (February 4) The flight of the Angel is one of the central activities of the Venezia carnival, and every year it brings together nearly 30,000 people in San Marco square, which at twelve o'clock noon flies down from the top of the 80 meter Angelo bell (winner of the previous Carnival).
The last day
The last day is the day before Ash Wednesday, when the winner of the edition is presented and the Svolo del León is celebrated, which is the raising of the Flag of Venice at the Campanille.
3. Vestment
The Venice Carnival is famous for its elegant and elaborate costumes, including masks and exquisite costumes. Here are its parts:
Masks
Masks are an essential part of the Venice Carnival. The best known are the Venetian-style masks, such as the "Columbian Mask", the "Bauta Mask" and the "Plague Doctor Mask". These masks are usually made of porcelain or paper mache and decorated with intricate details, such as feathers, sequins, and hand painting
Fancy Outfits
Carnival attendees typically wear fancy suits that are often designed to complement their masks. The costumes can be period, such as Renaissance, Baroque or 18th century costumes. Costumes are typically made of luxurious fabrics, such as silk, velvet, and lace, and are often decorated with embroidery and ornate details.
capes
Long capes and capes are common in Venice Carnival clothing. They can be vibrantly colored and are often made of luxurious fabrics. These capes add a touch of drama and elegance to outfits.
Accessories
Accessories play an important role in Carnival clothing. Gloves, hats and jewelry are common, and are often designed to match the overall theme of the costume.
SHOES
Old-style shoes, such as high-platform clogs, are popular at the Venice Carnival. These shoes can be decorative and add an additional touch of sophistication to the outfit.
HOW WE CELEBRATE
- During carnival, the city of Venice relaxes its traditional customs, and you can take advantage of the moment to experience the place in a different way.
- For example, the famous gondoliers even offer classes to visitors on how to drive a gondola, something that doesn't happen during the rest of the year.
- Without a doubt, any traveler can go to Venice at any other time of the year and have a great time. But, imagine dressing however you want without fear of making a fool of yourself, learning to drive a gondola with a professional gondolier as your teacher, and reliving one of the most questionable acts an ancient Venetian could do, wearing a colorful mask. The experience is totally worth it.
- Of course, all this happens while you meet people from all over the world, enjoying the music, dancing, food and fabulous parties that the Venice Carnival has to offer.
- Many people use the Venice Carnival as an opportunity to dress up in extravagant and colorful outfits, without necessarily being related to the theme of the festival. Meanwhile, other people simply wear ordinary clothes, only wearing masks.
- We suggest you at least wear a mask, to fit perfectly with the festivities and feel like you are part of its celebrations.
CULTURAL ASPECTS
- This carnival is totally different from those observed in the rest of
- the world. During this celebration, people dress up and go out into the streets to walk and take photos, either in organized or improvised parades.
- Thousands of visitors come to Venice to admire the spectacular costumes of those who invest thousands of euros to look like a star for a few days of the year or just to mix with the people and get lost in the alleys of this unique city. The Grand Canal of Venice is also a very important setting where you can watch the gondolas or pass by eating a frittella, a typical sweet. The record number of visitors and events is reached on Carnival Tuesday.
- The costumes are period costumes from the 17th century Venetian, as if they were straight out of a painting. During the carnival, many events and parties are also organized, some of them private that are difficult to attend
- without an invitation. Party prices are also high, and a night can cost
- up to €500. The goal of most visitors is to see Venice at Carnival and
- take photos in the best costumes.
CURIOSITIES

curiositie 2
curiositie 3
An important fact is that you must go dressed to the private parties we have talked about and perhaps they force you to go with a specific costume. In case you don't have a costume, there are businesses that rent period costumes. These costumes are rented for 24 hours and the rental price ranges from 350 euros to 1300. A recommended workshop is Ca da Sole, where they make the costumes, masks and hats themselves. Importantly, the only item that is not rented are masks for hygienic reasons.
Likewise, during these nights, the people could criticize the lords without fear, since there was no punishment. A strategy of the government at that time to make citizens believe that the control it exercised over them in various areas was not so harsh.
The Venice Carnival is a festival that dates back to the Middle Ages. During this time, there was one night a year when a great ball was organized, attended by many aristocrats from all over the world. In order to participate in the dance without being recognized by the people, the nobles came disguised and hid behind a mask.
