WRITING SKILLS

for and against essays

START

FOR & AGAINST essays can be defined as a type of argumentative essays. Giving arguments is an essential part of this kind of paper. What else should you know to succeed in writing for and against essays?

ESSENCE

Discuss advantages and disadvantages of the chosen/specified problem. In other words, introduce both positions on the chosen problem. Make an emphasis on your personal standpoint at the end of your paper.

STRUCTURE

An introductory paragraph in which you state the topic. Talk generally about the topic without giving your opinion.A main body in which the points for and the points against, along with your justification, appear in two different paragraphs. A closing paragraph in which you give either your opinion or a balanced consideration on the topic.

Advice

Write well-developed paragraphs. Make sure each paragraph has more than one sentence. Do not use informal style (short forms, colloquial language) or strong language (I firmly believe...) Begin each paragraph with a topic sentences which summarises what the paragraph is about. Make sure that the conclusion of your paper presents your own vision of the problem under discussion.

Before you start writing, make a list of for and against points If you want to make an impressive introduction:

  • Introduce a strange fact (for example, scholars suppose that in the future al people will be genetically perfect...)
  • Questions the reader directly (did you know that...)
  • Give a quotation (People will be genetically perfect, scholars say...)
