The brain stem performs basic functions like heart beat and breathing The amygdala is a part of the limbic system and combined with the brain stem are a part of your emotional brain including fight, flight, freeze The Prefrontal cortex is considered the brains control centre performing many diverse functions such as abstract reasoning, decision making and goal oriented behaviours. It is also involved in impulse control, acting responsibly, and acting with long term consequences in mind.
Your nervous System
The Nervous System is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and a complex network of nerves. This system is a part of our sensory world. It controls how we regulate our breathing, and heart function

Did you know? That anxiety is the brain's way of keeping you safe? This is why it is difficult to think your way out of anxiety because it is like letting go of your essential safety mechanism
How does this connect to your childs anxiety?
Knowing your brain knowing yourself
The more you understand how the brain reacts when under stress the better you can be proactive when your child has anxiety
The pre-frontal cortex, amygdala connection
Practicing techniques that help your prefrontal cortex and amygdala work together help when anxiety arises
The Nervous system is the key to self-regulation
Understanding self-regulation and its connection to your nervous system helps you to notice what is happening in your child's body when feeling anxiety. Sometimes its about getting comfortable with discomfort and sometimes grounding is helpful
Moving from fight, flight, freeze to safe/calm
You can help your child move towards safe and calm if you co-regulate. Connection is key!
The Noticing (aware) Self
Our Notcing self...
- is the feeling, sensing part of ourselves
- tells the brain that we are safe or in danger
- keeps us here in the present moment
- connected to our nervous system
- is constantly sending and receiving information
Using our noticing self helps us to ground ourselves, it helps us get back into our bodies and out of our thoughts’

The Thinking Self
Our Thinking Self...
- is an evolutionary response to safety and survival - good news!
- is the voice in your head that will never stop! - bad news!
- can be our worst enemy, or our trusted and wisest confidant
- has the ability to keep us from reaching our goals or enacting our values.
- can be managed by using our noticing self and discovering self
