cLEFT SENTENCES

Laura Padilla

TYPES

It

What

The person who

IT

It + past or present form of be + focus word + a who/that clause.

It was my mother who/that inspired me to be a teacher. It's my sister who taught me how to think for myself. It wasn't my father who gave me ther money. It was my brother who lent it to me. Cleft sentences are more common in writing, Why is that?

What

We can also add emphasis by beginning a sentence with "What". We can emphasize a nour, or we can emphasize a clause. Very popular on YouTube.

What interest me the most is art. = Art interest me the most. What I really want is to run the marathon. = I really want to run the marathon. We can use "the (main) thing that" instead of "what". What/The (main) thing that annoys me is the amount of traffic. What/The (main) thng that I worry about is the rise in prices. When the noun is plural, we use a plural form of be. What I really like are the chocolate bits in the middle.

The person who

We can add emphasis by beginning a sentence with prases such as "The person who/that", The thing that, The reason why and The place that"

The person who helped me most was my sister. The place that you really should visit is Vietnam. The reason why I called her was to say goodbye. We can also add emphasis with the phrases "All that" and "The only thing that". All that/the only thing that I want is to speak freely. All we need is love.
