What is an assessment?

An assessment is a task that is carried out by a teacher to work out the level a child is working at. It can also be something that is used to assess where a child is exceeding and where they may need a little more support.

Purpose of assessments

We use assessments to find out whether...
  1. Instructions were effective.
  2. Learners need more instructions.
  3. Learners are ready for the next step.
  4. A different approach is needed.
  5. Instructions need to be improved for next time and how it can be improved.

Learning-centred approach to assessments

Learning-centered assessment is an assessment that is designed to help our learners learn, not just to measure how well they have learned after the learning is over. The focus of the activity moves from the teacher, to the learners.

Assessments of, for and as learning

Assessments of Learning.

Assessments of Learning, also known as summative assessments, are used to track learner progress after a period of time for example a term or at the end of the year. The results obtained from these assesments usually determine whether or not a learner will progress to the next grade.

Assessment for Learning

Assessment for learning (AFL) is an approach to teaching and learning that creates feedback which is then used to improve students' performance. Students become more involved in the learning process and from this gain confidence in what they are expected to learn and to what standard.

Assessment as Learning

Improved relationships between teachers and students, improved attainment and achievement and Improved confidence, resilience, and self-esteem amongst learners.

Assessment as learning occurs when students reflect on and monitor their progress to inform their future learning goals

School-Based Assessments (SBA)

School-Based assessments allow learners to be assessed on a regular basis during the school year. These assessments are written and marked by the teacher. SBA`S are used to track how well learners have obtained certain skills, values, attitudes and content knowledge of the specific subject that cannot be recorded through a written format (orals and reading).
