In origine era una semplice torre di legno, poi la sua struttura divenne più complessa e robusta. Si utilizzò la pietra al posto di legno, e venne circondata da mura, fino a diventare una vera e propria cittadella fortificata.

I castelli iniziarono ad essere costruiti tra l'800 e il 1000, in Europa, ed in particolare tra Francia e Italia per difendersi dai barbari, dai ladri e dai pirati.

Gli abitanti erano sotto il potere dei signori dei castelli, sia laici che ecclesiastici. Serviva a: - Abitare - Controllare la popolazione - Difendersi dagli attacchi dei nemici.

Costruzioni fortificate che in caso di pericolo potevano accogliere gli abitanti dei villaggi
