Context Clues
We use context clues to understand the meaning of unknown words
Context clues:
No worries, Casey! We can use context clues to figure it out!
What does this word 'ecstatic' mean, Remy? I've never seen it before!
Ecstatic?! What does that mean? I have NEVER seen that word before...
The crowd was ecstatic, or filled with joy, when their team won.
The crowd was ecstatic, or filled with joy, when their team won.
First, let’s look for the definition right in the text. See how the sentence says, ‘The crowd was ecstatic, or filled with joy, when their team won’?
The crowd was ecstatic, or filled with joy, when their team won.
Correct! Sometimes we find examples that help us. Look for words like 'like', 'such as', or 'for instance'. Here it says, ‘Animals, such as lions and tigers, are called carnivores.
OH! So ecstatic means REALLY happy!
That means 'such as' is giving examples of what carnivores are!
Another clue is synonyms. They’re words that have the same meaning. ‘The ancient relic was very old and fragile.’ The word 'ancient' means the same as 'very old'.
So 'scorching' means really hot, the opposite of 'cool'!
synonyms are like word twins!
And don’t forget antonyms! They’re the opposite. ‘The sun was scorching, unlike the cool and gentle moonlight.
Hmm, 'The puzzle was so challenging, it left me completely perplexed, unsure of how to begin.' Unsure... so perplexed means confused!
Now, your turn! Read the passage and find the clues. What does 'perplexed' mean here?
THE END
