Rennaisance
New invention of the holiday in the modern sense with the development of railways, steamships, and the introduction of paid holidays that marked the beginning of domestic mass tourism.
Long ago travelling for pleasure was almost unknown. Most travellers such as soldiers only travelled because they had to. Roads were dangerous.
Overseas travel became more popular during the renaissance, people such as students or merchants were most likely to travel to distant lands by sea.
Wealthy people with enough time and money started travelling for pleasure and culture. The young aristocracy travelled abroad and went on the Grand tour to complete their education and visit cities of art.
In the Middle ages the world, for most people in europe, consisted only of the town they luved in. Only a few travelled for trade or to go on pilgrimages.
