Human body

Food

Transform nutrients into molecules our bodies can use.

Excrete waste and harmful sustances

Take in nutrients, like food, vitamins and oxygen.

Nutrition is a simple process made up of three main steps:

Digestive system

The stomach is made of strong muscles. Food is broken down into small pieces here Gastric juices mix with the food

When it is liquid, food is passed into the small intestine. It is mixed with bile from the liver and pancreatic fluid from the pancreas. This breaks the mixture down into different types of nutrients. Afterwatds, absorption occurs, and nutrients are passed into the blood.

Food is passed into the oesophagus when we swallow. The epiglottis stops food going down the windpipe. Muscles contract to send the food down to the stomach.

Saliva production begins when we smell food. Theeth crush food as we chew. Food is shaped into a ball by the tongue.

Undigested waste continues through the large intestine. Water reabsorption into blood occurs. Solid waste passes trough the rectum and leaves our body through the anus.

The circulatory system

The circulatory system delivers nutrients and oxygen to all the cells and tissues in the body. It has three main parts: the blood, the blood vessels and the hearth.

Blood: Red liquid. Transport oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients around the body. Made up of cells with different functions.

Blood vessels: Arteries carry blood with oxygen away from the heart and aorund the body. Capillaries connect the arteries and veins together and allow for gas exchange. Veins carry blood with carbon dioxide back to the hearth.

Hearth: A muscular organ with four chambers. Pumps blood around the body.

The ciruclatory system

Blood flows around the body in two loops. This is called circulation

Pulmonary loop: Blood flows from the heart to the lungs and then back to the heart. It expels carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen.

Systemic loop: Blood flows from the heart to the rest of the body. It delivers oxygen to all the cells and tissues and picks up carbon dioxide and waste.

Oxygenated blood flows past the small intestine to pick up nutrients and delivers them to the rest of the body.

Respiratory system

Inhalation
Exhalation

The respiratory system is the body´s gas exchange centre. It brings oxygen into the body and lets carbon dioxide out. The respiratory system is closely connected to the excretory system, which eliminates waste and keeps us cold.

The diaphragm (the large muscle under your lungs) contracts and lowers. The lungs inflate. Oxygen flows from nose and mouth, trachea, bronchi, bronchioli, alveoli and blood vessels.

The diaphragm relaxes and rises The lungs deflate. Carbon dioxide flows from blood vessels, alveoli, bronchioles, bronchi, trachea and nose and mouth.

Excretory system

All blood passes trough the renal arteries in our kidneys where the blood is filtered. This produces urine, which is wase mixed with water. Our skin is also part of the excretory system. Sweat glands in the skin excrete sweat, a mixture of water and salts, trough pores. When sweat evaporates from the skin, it cools us down.
