How do I plan for enrichment strategies?

Plan/Strategize:

Analyze Data:

Ask:

Think:

If you had more time in your class what else would you like the students to do or explore/learn about?

How will they be evaluated? What is the learning goal? What issues might arise?

Which students need enrichment opportunities?

What topics have your students expressed an interest? What would they like to learn more about?

  • What results or student outcomes do you expect to see as a result of enrichment strategies?
  • What is the specific content that needs to be enriched?
  • How do you decide who gets enriched?
  • What choices will the students have?

Foundations of Enrichment Differentiation

  • Select texts and materials that provide the appropriate level of challenge
  • Offer extension experiences with small group work
  • Offer cross-curricular applications
  • Include problem-solving and inquiry-based activities
  • Facilitate student-led questioning and discussions
  • Incorporate real-world problem-solving activities
  • Allow students choice in how they demonstrate mastery
  • Spark critical thinking by infusing meaningful media, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills into the lessons/instruction
  • Foster creativity by incorporating graphic, visual, auditory, media, and other engaging resources

Why enrichment?

  • extends learning and challenges students that have mastered the content
  • encourages students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • keeps advanced students engaged

It is not about adding more work but instead differentiating the work to meet the learners needs.

Enrichment Strategies?

  • Debating- real-world issues, claims, etc
  • Students lead/teach the class (not just read off a slide)-create a presentation, explain concepts, etc.
  • Peer Tutoring
  • Outdoor exploration
  • Engineering activities
  • Community service projects
  • Experimentation- Gizmos, design your own experiment
  • Creating a review game with student-generated questions
  • Problem-solving/designing (theme park, roller coaster, etc)
  • Write a story, song, or poem to explain a concept
  • Crime lab class- solve the mystery
  • Science of athletics-physics, biology
  • Interest centers>> create an exhibit
  • Independent study project
  • Provide more higher-order thinking questions
  • Create your own blog- did you know? or a podcast
  • Create a postcard or journal from an explorer or scientist's point of view
  • Providing choice (choice boards)

Enrichment is :

  • Flexible groups
  • Choice for students
  • Content connected
  • Increase in depth, complexity, or breadth
  • Could involve direct instruction or independent studies
  • Cross-curricular
  • Different work, not more work
  • High-level thinking skills applied
  • Planned and purposeful, not busy or random work unrelated to the content
  • Responsive to students needs
