Here at The Comet, we give students a place to collaborate with their peers and show their writing potential, all in a way that makes a great publication for students, teachers, and parents alike to enjoy!

Chapter 1: The Puzzle Portal He clicked the puzzle given to him by his grandmother, Forest was no ordinary kid. His parents made him travel to exotic places all around the world and he would get on some crazy adventure. “Forest, my dear,” His grandmother’s voice came from the doorway of his bedroom. “It’s almost 11 at night, my dear. You should sleep. You do have school in the morning.” Forest was also given the struggle of paying attention. His grandmother grabbed the puzzle from his hands and set the small box down on his nightstand. She patted his head and then walked out the door, shutting it quietly, so his parents wouldn’t wake up. He turned on his lamp and started playing with the puzzle box again, this time, he thought about what he did instead of rushing. Nearing midnight, he clicked the last piece into its square and it clicked open. When it did, there was a small black circle. He stuck his hand in and he was sucked into the puzzle. When he awoken, he realized there were people in the puzzle. Forest turned to a man walking behind him, “Where are we?” Forest asked. “Welcome,” the man greeted. “To Hafcanastan.” End of chapter 1.

Where did all the time go? It's as if the sands of time slipped through my fingers like elusive grains, and in the blink of an eye, I find myself standing at the crossroads, ready to sculpt the clay of my next significant choice. It transformed from moonlit sessions of playful hours to moonlit sessions of scholarly pursuits. Toys and swings to phones and a never-ending to-do list. Mother systematizes the laundry while I sketch in my coloring book wondering what adventures I will conquer as I age. Mother still does the laundry but I do the dishes and wish to return to when I was younger. School was amusing with no pressure, Now the pressure is on. The prospect of attending high school excited me, Now, it is time for me to consider college.

If you’re a fan of media such as Doctor Who, Percy Jackson, or The Hunger Games, you’re currently in luck! If you aren’t currently aware, all 3 of these franchises have new content coming out very soon! Starting off, Doctor Who will have three new anniversary specials coming out over the following weeks! These will be premiering on BBC One in the U.K as well as Ireland, and on Disney+ internationally, which includes the U.S. They will be titled “The Star Beast”, “Wild Blue Yonder”, and “The Giggle”, respectively, with a Christmas special also following titled “The Church on Ruby Road”. These three episodes are set to premiere on November 25th, December 2nd, and December 9th, while the Christmas special will be premiering on December 25th. There will also be the return of fan favorites such as David Tennant, Catherine Tate, and Bernard Cribbins. Fans all around the globe are excited to see what these specials will have in store for our beloved doctor and his companion. (Continued on next page)

Time Travel, Demigods, and More!

Also coming to Disney+ in the relatively near future is the Percy Jackson television series! Based on the book series by award winning author Rick Riordan, the series will tell the story of 12-year-old modern demigod Percy Jackson, who, despite only recently being made aware of his divine powers, is accused by the sky god Zeus of stealing his master lightning bolt. He, along with help from his friends Annabeth and Grover, he must go through the adventure of a lifetime to keep Olympus from falling into complete chaos. The television series will be premiering December 20th exclusively on Disney+, and the first season is set to consist of 8 episodes. And last but certainly not least, is the new Hunger Games film! At the time of writing this article (November 17th) it has just been released today, so no spoilers will be included in this article. It takes place around the time of the 10th annual Hunger Games and follows the story of a much younger President Snow. Of course, none of the characters from the previous movies or books will appear as this is a prequel to the series, and thus focuses more on Snow’s backstory. The storyline is that Snow is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, who is from District 12, and using their skills for showmanship and political savvy, they must “reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake”. Can you think of a cause that you are passionate about? If so, how did you find out about it? Today we are going to talk about how spreading awareness can help the cause you care about. There are so many ways that you can spread an important message to the world. And they all come together to make a change. In this speech, I will be sharing how and why protesting works, the true power that us consumers hold in creating change, and what small communities can do to help. What is protesting first of all? Protesting (by google definition) is the expression of disapproval of or objection to something. The most common way we see protesting is people marching, chanting, and often times holding up a sign with a meaningful message. People do this to often put pressure on our government, so they can make change by passing laws, or creating policies. We see this happen all over the world and in history, because protesting is one of the most effective ways to spread awareness, plus actively creating change. Marching isn’t the only way to protest. People have boycotted, done sit-ins, and practiced civil disobedience. So, with that aside, why does protesting work? (Continued on next page)

Charles Tilly born May 27, 1929 in Lombard, IL, is an American Sociologist and Political scientists. He accomplished many things, including his social movement theory, that I will be sharing today called WUNC displays. WUNC stands for worthiness, unity, number, and commitment. He argues that all of these qualities contribute to a successful protest in his book “Social movements 1768 – 2004.” Worthiness refers to the “deservingness” the public holds to have their ideas acknowledged. It ultimately convinces politicians that they are “good citizens” that deserves to be heard. Basically, protesters can show “worthiness” by behaving in a way that’s calm dignified, safe, and overall the opposite of destructive/crazy. Unity refers to the “togetherness” of the protesters in their ideas and motive for protesting. It’s important for protesters to have a consistent message to create clear communications between them and government authorities. If that message isn’t consistent then action would be much harder to take, hence the protest being unproductive, and ultimately a waste of time. (Continued on next page)

A unified and consistent protest also highlights the power we have in our words in turn convincing the politicians to take our message into account and possibly into cooperating with us. Number simply refers to the amount of people that supports a certain cause. This is important because the larger the number the more likely that governments are pressured to make necessary change. Lastly, commitment refers to the persistence of these protesters. This shows representatives that protesters are willing to not give up on what they believe in which shows that their belief is deeply rooted within them. In conclusion, a large protest that is safe, has a clear message/want/need, and that is constituent and not willing to give up makes a great protest! In U.S. History, we see that racism and discrimination is a huge problem. To combat that, a protest called March on Washington was held. If we compared the march to the WUNC display we’ll see that this protest was indeed successful because it was peaceful, the purpose for it was clear and consistent, it had many people (nearly a quarter million) marching, and there was so much work put into it to help pass the bill which demonstrates commitment. What power do we as consumers have in creating change? When I say consumers, I mean consumers of anything like information, entertainment, products, and services. We as the consumers play a huge factor in industries that supply them, because we are the one who put time and money to receive the things we consume every day. But we also have the power to do the complete opposite. Boycott. Boycott is a withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest. Why would people boycott you may ask? It could be for reasons like a business contributing to a negative cause, or they are doing wrong themselves. Companies later face backlash for it and they start losing profits because people started boycotting them. The effects of boycotting can vary but the ideal outcome is that people start to take notice of it. People can post about the boycott and why a company/business is being boycotted. People can also find out about it in the news, and they start boycotting as well. This can force business to do better and stop supporting a negative cause. To add to the significance of people being informed about a boycott, people can not only know what businesses is being boycotted, they also find out why that business is being boycotted. We talked about the two major ways of spreading awareness. But like I said before there’s many ways to spread awareness that can lead to bigger movements like boycotting and other ways of protesting that make huge impacts. You can create fundraisers at schools, religious places (mosques, churches, etc.), or just any place where your community meets up! If you have a business yourself you can install a jar or a box with a sign that says the organization and the cause you will sending your money to, if people do decide to donate. You can post about the cause you care about on social media. You can volunteer at your local centers, or if you have the means, you can travel to a country in need of your help. You can join events dedicated to your cause and donate or donate online (make sure it’s credible). These are just some of the actions you can take to contribute to your cause. But remember, it all starts with yourself. You can inform yourself of what’s happening around the world, and you can tell your family and friends about what’s going on.(Continued on next page)

We talked about protesting and boycotting being an effective way to spread awareness because it leads to government and major businesses to take action. We also talked about the little things that we can do without relying on a huge crowd. In conclusion, the little things that we can do right now can inspire and lead to bigger actions being taken so that we can reach our goal in bettering our world.

A History Of Ballet

Introduction When someone says ‘ballet’ you probably think of a graceful ballerina leaping around a stage in a beautiful theater, but it wasn’t always like that. Ballet and its expectations have changed a lot over centuries. In this article I will be providing a brief history of ballet, spanning from the creation of the dance to the modern outlook on it. The Start of Ballet Ballet started in the 15th century in Italian Renaissance courts, the dancers would entertain nobles at lush events such as weddings, where the expert dancers would teach the audience the movements and they would participate. About 100 years later, Catherine De Medici -an important noblewoman- instituted funding ballet in the French court. The extravagant festivals launched the growth of Ballet de cour which was an organization that included dance, decor, costume, song, music, and poetry. Later, in the 1600s King Louis XIV popularized and systematized the dance style, which led to ballet changing from a casual activity to a specialized sport. (Continued on next page)

A History Of Ballet

In 1661 a ballet academy debuted in France, just twenty years later dancers were performing on stage instead of at courts. An opera titled Le Triomphe de l’Amour included ballet segments which caught on quickly and became common in many shows. Although this seems like a feat for ballet dancers, it caused dance to only be seen as a part of opera, not its own form of art. Ballet choreographer and master, Jean Gorges Noverre fought against this, saying that ballet could be entertaining by itself. He believed that ballet should be expressive and dramatic and show connections between characters. This established a new style of ballet called ballet d’action, in this style there is a story being conveyed with exaggerated movement. Noverre’s work is deemed the forerunner of narrative ballets of the 1800s. (Continued on next page)

Progression The 19th century was a time of big changes in the ballet world, which provided some of the most well-known ballets. In the first half of the 1800s the Romantic Movement started, the movement influenced many forms of art, it was a time of mystical, romantical, worlds of spirits. The ballets of this time are called romantic ballets, this classification includes Giselle, and La Sylphide. At this time, the expectations of ballerinas heightened, they now were supposed to dance on the tips of their toes, or en pointe. Costumes were altered as well, now female dancers wore calf-length, full skirts made of tulle called romantic tutus. Ballet became extremely popular in Russia during the second half of the 19th century. Russian choreographers and composers took the dance further, ballets such as The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake started a new era of ballet called classical ballet. The purpose of this style was to show off technique- work en pointe, flexibility, grace, and precision- at its best. Complex sequences that display challenging moves, leaps, and turns were brought into the stories. Another apparel change occurred, ballerinas now wore short, stiff tutus that didn't hide their legs so you could see the difficulty of all movement and footwork. (Continued on next page)

Modern Ballet In the early 1900s choreographers started to experiment with movement and costumes, breaking the rules of classical ballet and its story. A new ballet called The Rite of Spring was created, and had audiences rioting. In this ballet the music was discordant, the moves were unconventional, along with the themes such as human sacrifice. George Balanchine (choreographer and New York City Ballet founder) would come to America and change ballet furthermore. He initiated neo-classical ballet, a style that expanded on classical structure. Balanchine is one of the greatest pathfinders of contemporary or plotless ballet. These ballets didn’t have a distinct theme or story to them, they were just supposed to show emotion and leave the rest up to interpretation of the audience. Today ballet can be any of the previous styles discussed, most likely you will see a fuse of all of them, using the classical technique but showing the emotions of contemporary and romantic ballet. Conclusion As you can tell, ballet has come a long way from where it started, and I haven’t even begun to talk about inclusivity or different genres of dance. Choreographers are always building and making enhancements to the genre of ballet and I think that will continue on forever.

I interviewed my friend Brianne G from my 6th grade classes, and I asked her for a homemade recipe. She told me about her family’s: Pasteles! She quotes about them “Sometimes a sweeting bitter flavor to it.” It’s a sweet-bitter dough with either chicken or pork, olives, and roasted red peppers. This is a challenge for the cooks of CCA and their families. [pass-tell-es] [a-cho-te] [plan-tain][a-do-bo] What do you need for the dough or Masa: 3 large yams 5 plantains Achiote (a red and zingy spice) Put these things in a food processor, and voila! You have Masa [ma-sa] This is the way Brianne makes them, you can totally make them a different way, but this way is the best. The filling: 3 cups pork or chicken 2 seedless green olives Sliced roasted red peppers Adobo 3 tsp achiote oil Adobo note: Depending on how much Masa you have, you need half on half of 1/3 cup. Achiote oil note: Used for flavor and color Warning from the recipe: NO SALT! (Continued on next page)

Step 1: Cut a piece square piece of parchment paper “11 inches [top] by “9 inches [bottom] Step 2: Cut plantain leaves: Wing it! But smaller than the parchment paper. Not too small though Step 3: Cut plantain string as long as your arm. Get an adult to help Step 4: Put down plantain leaf down on the parchment Step 5: Put down some Achiote oil and spread it around evenly, not too much or it will be soggy. Step 6: Grab your rice spoon and scoop a spoonful of the masa and spread it into an oval shape. If you can see the plantain leaf through the oval, put it down a little more. Don’t put any pressure on it! (Continued on next page)

Step 7: Grab your cooked pork or chicken and put it on top of the masa. [Make sure you had it in broth! Drain out some of the broth with a spin, but not all of it!” Use a spoonful of meat or to your liking Step 8: Cut off the top and bottom of your red peppers and cut down the long way. Then grab two strips of the pepper and put in with your chicken or pork Step 9: Chop up some seedless green olives, [like what you did with the peppers] and put them with your chicken or pork and pepper. Make sure they weren’t in any jar with liquid! Step 10: From the long way, turn the parchment paper facing AWAY from you Step 11: Before you fold the parchment paper, put some masa on top of the chicken or pork, olives, and pepper (Continued on next page)

step 12: Fold the plantain leaf into a square Step 13: Fold the farthest corner over the plantain leaf Step 14: Fold the corner in front of you over the already folded piece of parchment Step 15: Once you have folded both sides, carefully fold over both of the ends over the parchment Step 16: Grab your plantain string and around the top and make it look like an X, then do the same to the other side Step 17: Take a pot of water and put it on the stove over medium-high heat. Once it’s boiling, drop your brick of parchment into the water, do one at a time Step 18: Let it cook for 1-2 hours, and then after it’s been 2 hours, grab tongs and remove it from the hot water, be very gentle or you’ll break it Step 19: Wait for it to cool, in the meantime: make your other pasteles and put them in the water Step 20: Cut the string with scissors and unwrap the parchment Step 21: Take off the plantain leaf and ta-da! You made Porto Rican Pasteles! Brianne’s way of eating them is with ketchup, but experiment with different kinds of toppings and sauces. Are you a baker? Are you tired of being a rule-follower when it comes to baking? Maybe you’ve always wanted to bake but what’s keeping you from giving it a try is the restriction you’ve felt from the recipes. I’m here to tell you that nothing is stopping you from making a recipe your own, and with a little creativity, you can add your own spin to anything. First, it might be helpful to go over the basics of what baking is. It’s essentially cooking something with dry heat, typically in an oven, and makes your kitchen smell outstandingly wonderful. I learned how to bake a few years ago when I received a baking class as a gift. It was an online course led by Christina Tosi, baker extraordinaire and owner of Milk Bar. Fellas, it was a game-changer. I learned to make quite a few types of baked desserts, but for now I’ll teach you folks my favorite: cookies. Cookies are a delicacy. They’re made up of butter, sugar, flour, an egg, and then some sort of mix-in. Boom. That’s all a cookie is! (Continued on next page)

That might sound a little abstract, so let me show you. Christina Tosi has a recipe for cornflake chocolate chip cookies that we will use for our example. The recipe is constructed of the usual butter, sugar, etc., but also includes vanilla extract, chocolate chips, and Frosted Flakes. Well, it’s fall, y’all (rhyme 100% intended). Anyways, say I want to change these ingredients to give the cookies a fall theme. I go down the list of ingredients and see what element I’m going to replace. Maybe I want to change the cornflakes to a pumpkin spice Frosted Flake thing and swap chocolate chips for butterscotch, mix-ins, I’ll throw in some pretzel powder for part of my flour, maple extract instead of vanilla, also a mix-in. Now, the secret to creative baking you’ve been waiting for: just swap ingredients. Simply replace recipe ingredients with ones of similar form but maybe a different flavor, like regular chocolate chips to white chocolate chips. The key is to look at your ingredients like a book, each ingredient is a chapter that when combined with the others makes a wonderful flavor story.

Mix-in ideas

If you’re feeling stuck and aren’t exactly sure what ingredients will work or taste good, I’ll include a few suggestions at the end. The most important thing to realize with baking is that you will not be perfect on the first try. It takes time, energy, and persistence! Write down your ingredient changes to recipes so you can clearly see what you did and might have to change next time. With every batch and every anxiety filled wait by the oven, you will improve and get better, you just need to keep on trying! In conclusion, baking is a flow of nonstop imagination, and nothing is stopping you from changing recipes to give them a different flavor story. We went over cookies and how you can easily change the ingredients to fit whatever theme or occasion arises. Y’all can do it, get out there and don’t be afraid to fail, because failure is always the first step to success, go ahead and start having some fun with baking!

The following shows an interview that I did with Ms. Davis, the 6th grade honors social studies teacher at CCA. Me: What is your favorite part of being a teacher? Ms. Davis: My favorite part about being a teacher is connecting with my students. Me: What is your favorite part about CCA? Ms. Davis: I like the freedom that CCA gives us to be creative with our students and our teaching style. Me: Have you ever taught any other subjects before teaching social studies? Ms. Davis: I’ve taught English and science. Me: What is your favorite unit of 6th grade honors social studies to teach? Ms. Davis: I like to teach about sub-Saharan Africa. Me: Of all the places you teach about in 6th grade honors social studies, which one would you like to visit the most? Ms. Davis: I would want to visit East Asia. Interview with Ms. Davis

Logic. It’s the dos and don’ts of right thinking. Maybe you think you know logic, but what if you’ve been learning what to think and not how to think? I’m taking a course outside of school where I’m learning the rules of right thinking, taught by Shanda Fulbright, an instructor and content creator for Online Christian Courses (OCC). In this article, I’ll be sharing Miss Shanda’s background, thoughts about the science of reasoning and its importance, while additionally going over examples of logic and how to apply it to your daily life. Miss Shanda grew up in a Christian home in Fresno, California, where she believed in Christ, but only because her parents did. A curiosity enveloped her, she knew there had to be evidence or some better reason to believe in God. This drive led to her love for apologetics, a word the comes from Greek word, apologia, which meant to give a defense in court. Today that word has evolved into an extensive field of academics, including science, philosophy, archaeology, history, and moral reasoning. By finding apologetics, she found the evidence for God! Thinking Logically

Miss Shanda earned her teaching credentials in California, where she started to raise her three boys. She saw the schools there were really trying to get the students to focus on themselves, encouraging them to meditate on positive affirmations about their own greatness and think, me, me, me, and to think less about the greatness of God. To combat this, Miss Shanda taught her boys apologetics to regain their focus on God and how we know he exists. Eventually, Miss Shanda and her family moved to North Carolina where she had the opportunity to work with author, radio host, and apologist Dr. Frank Turek! They have worked together to create three different online courses for kids. These include Let’s Get Real: Examining the Evidence for God, Is Hell Real: Understanding A Place Nobody Likes to Talk About, and Train Your Brain: An Introduction to Logic. Train Your Brain is the focus of this article. Train Your Brain is a crash course in logic that goes over what exactly logic is and how to use it. Miss Shanda describes logic to be like grammar, it has rules. Just like there is a right and wrong way to structure a sentence, there’s a right and wrong way of how to think! Miss Shanda thinks it’s essential for not only adults but younger kids to learn this because we need to arm ourselves with proper thinking to defend our claims and recognize improper thinking from other’s claims. A fitting example of applying logical thinking to real life is the law of excluded middle. The law of excluded middle states every proposition is either true or its opposite is true, but there’s no middle alternative. For example, I’m either a man or a woman; I can’t identify as a cat or anything else, that would defy biology and science as we know it. There’s no middle possibility, it’s either one or the other. An error in thinking is called a fallacy, for example the Red Herring fallacy. The Red Herring Fallacy is named for the fish that hunters use when training a dog to stay on a scent, the Red Herring is meant to test them and throw them off. It’s perfectly named, because a Red Herring fallacy is meant to throw an argument off track, to change the subject. For instance, say two Jonas Brothers fans are debating who the best brother is, and one says, “Well, you haven’t even listened to all of their songs!” Did you catch it? The one friend drew the attention away from the brothers and to the number of songs the other fan had listened to. Miss Shanda’s number one bit of advice for this situation is to not defend someone else’s claim, they have the burden of proof! Instead of remarking about how you’ve listened to most of their songs, you could respond by saying that you can get the subject of songs listened to later, but that they’re talking about the Jonas Brothers themselves right now. In summary, logic is the way of right thinking and it’s extremely important to have it as a skill and mindset. There are various real-life situations where logic can be used and where it is not correctly used. Our Beloved Phillies: Reflections and Looking Ahead

Few teams in all of Major League sports are as beloved as our hometown Phillies.  In the past two years the Phillies have made the playoffs and no other team enjoyed a greater home field advantage.  This is partly why it was so disappointing that the Phillies lost the National League championship series by losing the final two games on their home field. The 2021-22 season ended with the Phillies loss in the World Series to the Houston Astros and this past season ended with a loss in the National League championship series to the upstart Diamondbacks .   The Phillies are a perennial contender to be sure and the disappointments of recent seasons are hard to swallow. However, the team has a strong nucleus that should be competitive and lead the Phillies to the playoffs again in the 2024-25 season. Bryce Harper, JT Realmuto, Zach Wheeler and other core players are thankfully all under contract.  (Continued on next page)

Going into the offseason, one of the biggest questions was “would the Phillies re-sign star picture and longtime veteran Aaron Nola?” To the delight of Phillies fans everywhere Nola recently signed a seven-year contract worth a whopping 172 million dollars! Another big question mark this offseason is “will the Phillies re-sign long term veteran Reese Hoskins?” Unfortunately, with the emergence of Bryce Harper playing first base this past year, it seems unlikely that Hoskins will resign as there does not seem to be an open spot for another first baseman.   The Phillies have other needs as well. They could use another star pitcher. Nick Castellanos fell short in some key moments during the playoffs and one has to wonder if he will be traded or if the Phillies will look to find another slugger that is more consistent in key moments. The Phillies are a great team and a lot of fun to watch. We can all hope that as this core of star Phillies players stays together over the next few years, one year soon they will win the World Series and there will be celebration and parade on Broad Street. Go Phils!

Ever think of taking up a martial arts class? Not sure which one to take part in? Or, are you just wanting to enlighten yourself on an incredibly interesting and unique sport? You’ve come to the right place. With so many techniques and customs part of each style, it can be difficult to keep them separate, or know which one to choose. In this article, I’ll be highlighting five popular styles of martial arts, Karate, MMA, Judo, Jujutsu, and Kung-Fu. Starting off, we have Karate, an Okinawan martial art meaning “empty hand” in Japanese. This particular style places importance on powerful kicks, strikes, and blocks using various points of contact, most commonly the hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Practices can include board breaking, katas, self-defense, and sparring. A kata is a specific set of kicks, strikes, and blocks to defend against an attack from one or more people. Next up, we have MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). This style combines multiple other styles like boxing, wrestling, Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, and Muay Tai, and has dated back to 648 BCE. Like boxing and wrestling, MMA competitors compete in a closed ring. Striking, throwing, kicking, and grappling are all elements used in a classic MMA fight. Then there’s Judo, which was created in 1882 and taught to Japanese Samurai. This unarmed style is ultimately known for its use of throwing and pinning, as well as the use of pressure points (pushing on sensitive areas, commonly near the neck and head area.) It is important to learn how to throw, as well as how to fall correctly to avoid injuries during competitive matches. (Continued on next page)

Next in line we have Jujitsu, a mostly unarmed style of combat that uses few or no weapons and instead utilizes holds and throws to weaken the opponent. Similar to Judo, this martial art was taught to Japanese Samurai in the 17th century. Although it started as an extremely brutal combat style with its purpose being to “destroy the enemy” in battle, it has now evolved into a martial art of self-defense and using an opponent’s assault against them rather than initiating an aggressive attack. Finally, we have Kung Fu, a Chinese art meaning “skill” that dates back to 1111 BCE. This style places extreme importance on self-discipline and spiritual aspects. It is a mostly unarmed sport and uses aspects of other styles like Karate and Tae-Kwon-Do. It involves extreme coordination and was built around the abilities and structure of the human body. Hand and arm strikes are heavily relied on. (Continued on next page)

I joined the newspaper because I thought it would be awesome to work with others who share the same interests as me and being able to work together on something that we’re all proud of. And a certain few editors may or may not have additionally convinced me to join… What is your favorite subject in school? It’s a tie between Math and ELA. Favorite Movie/TV Show/Book Top Gun: Maverick is my favorite movie, I just love the characters and all the action, my favorite show is Merlin, and my favorite book is The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind? I have a black-lab/golden-retriever named Willow, and recently got a cat named Grover. Any hobbies? I dabble in art, obstacle courses, and actually just got into Rubik’s cubes.

What is your editor position? I’m the editor for the Lifestyle, Q&A, and Tutorials section of the paper. Explain what your position/job is in the newspaper. I organize and review articles that fall under my section and work with the writers to make sure we have articles for my specific category. After some fine-tuning, voila! that’s the finished product you folks know and love! What is it like being an editor? Honestly, I haven’t been an editor for all that long, but I can still say it’s a fantastic experience, it’s really cool to be part of a group of creative thinkers that helps each other out. What are your goals for the newspaper this year? This year I want to strengthen my writing skills, specifically working on making my articles a comprehensive as possible and making sure I can successfully and confidently get my point across.

Mason is a 7th grade student and this is his 3rd year at CCA. In his free time, he enjoys baking and hanging out with friends.

Can you explain what your job/position is on the newspaper? I am a Submissions Editor, so I help to add the submissions to the newspaper. I look over to make sure nobody's submission is missed and I work with the editor in chief once I'm finished adding all the articles. What's it like being an editor? I love it! I like being able to read the different articles and seeing what people like writing about. Favorite TV Show/Movie/Book?Single line text. My favorite show is Total Drama Island, my favorite movie is Pearl, and my favorite book is House of Leaves Do you have any pets? If so, what kind, and what are they named? I have a Pomeranian named Joy and a guinea pig named Pudding! Favorite school subject? I love art but I also like English. Last, but not least, any hobbies? I love working with my peers in order to make a great school newspaper. I also love seeing everyone's ideas and creativity come out in their writing and photography. Favorite TV Show/Movie/Book? My favorite TV Show would have to be Sweet Home. My favorite movie is The Maze Runner Death Cure, and my favorite book is Crank Palace (A maze runner novella). .Do you have any pets? Can you explain what your job/position is on the newspaper? I am a copy editor. Copy editing is the process of revising written material to improve readability. What's it like being an editor? Being an editor is like being a detective. You have to search for typos, grammar errors, and inconsistencies. You have to be careful and detail-oriented to make sure that the end product is perfect. You also have to be creative to come up with better ways of expressing ideas and to make sure the text flows well and is easy to comprehend. It's a challenging job, but also a very rewarding one. .Favorite TV Show/Movie/Book? My favorite book and movie is The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is a timeless story that explores complex themes of morality, justice, and the power of knowledge. The characters are relatable and engaging, and the story is full of suspense and surprises. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind, and what are they named? I have a cat and her name is Luna. I've had her for about 3 years now and can't imagine life without her. Favorite school subject? I love computer science. It has revolutionized the way we work and live. Computers can help us solve complex issues, and they have made our lives easier and more efficient. I'm passionate about discovering new ways to use technology to make our lives better. Last, but not least, any hobbies? I used to be a rhythmic gymnast for 8 years. Being an editor is truly an incredible experience. What are your goals for the newspaper this year? My goal for the newspaper this year is to make the paper an exceptionally pleasurable experience for readers.

What are your goals for the newspaper this year?  My goal is to work outside of my zone this year, and not only focus on the sports section, but help other people if they need it.

Omai is a 6th grade student and has been at CCA for three years in total. In his free time, he enjoys reading, writing, and playing video games.

Can you explain what your job/position is on the newspaper? My job as an article editor is to overview all of the articles in the newspaper, check for errors/plagarism and work with writers and Mr. Lawrence to make any suggestions for the articles :) What's it like being an editor? This is my first year as an editor so it feels really cool to be called one :D I honestly can't wait to work with articles as we move on through this year! Favorite TV Show/Movie/Book? Favorite TV show at the moment is The Price is Right, and my favorite movie is The Polar Express. Favorite book has been Wonder for about 6 years now, haha. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind, and what are they named? I have one dog named Stella! Favorite school subject? My favorite school subject is American Government. Last, but not least, any hobbies? When I am not doing school work, I am either playing Roblox, crocheting, or in dance class :)

Why did you join the newspaper? I joined the newspaper because I loved to read it in past years and thought it would be fun to put something like this together for the whole school. What is your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject is probably Social Studies or ELA, it’s hard to pick though. Favorite Movie/TV Show/Book I’m not sure of my favorite movie/TV show but I love the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and the Hunger Games trilogy. Some of my favorite genres are fantasy, historical fiction, and dystopian/dark fantasy. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind? I make sure that there are enough articles in my section and ensure that my section (News and Trending) is organized and neat for each issue. What is it like being an editor? I love being an editor! This is my second year and it is a lot of work but I really like it, and it’s very rewarding to see the final product of each issue. What are your goals for the newspaper this year? My goals are to improve my writing skills and write articles that are true to my interests.

Isabella is a 7th grade student and this is her 4th year at CCA. In her free time, she enjoys reading, listening to music, art, and spending time with her friends and family.

As an editor, I review articles and work with other editors and staff writers. We all work together to make our publications that best that they can be. It is a great experience every year! Favorite TV Show/Movie/Book? The Andy Griffith Show is one of my favorites. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind, and what are they named? No pets :) Favorite school subject? English is my favorite subject. I love writing! Last, but not least, any hobbies? I enjoy music as well as playing basketball.

Why did you join the newspaper? I joined because I thought it was a good experience and I might find something new about myself. What is your favorite subject in school? English and Science. Honors classes make it more fun. Favorite Movie/TV Show/Book My favorite book is ‘Four: A Divergent Collection’ and it has become a comfort book for me. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind? Ok well, I have five little dogs. Two dachshunds, One Chiwawa, One Foxy Russel Mix, and, One Chiwawa mix. Any hobbies? I crochet and I am a part of the crochet club.

What is your editor position? I am a photography editor. Explain what your position/job is in the newspaper.  As a photography editor, I look out for spaces where a picture might be needed. It is also my job to edit and make sure the pictures are of quality. What is it like being an editor?  It is fun and not as overwhelming as one would think. What are your goals for the newspaper this year?  My goal is to make an easy-to-read newspaper for students, families, and teachers.

Emma is currently in 8th grade and has been at CCA for three years. In their free time, they enjoy crocheting, knitting, and photography.

Why did you join the newspaper? I thought that it would be very fun. What is your favorite subject in school? If I had to pick one, probably ELA. However, I really enjoy all of my classes. I read through the articles and make sure that there are no grammar or spelling mistakes. What is it like being an editor? It is very fun. What are your goals for the newspaper this year? For it to be the best newspaper CCA has ever had.

Collin is in 7th grade and this is his second year at CCA. In his free time, he enjoys playing chess.

Why did you join the newspaper? I love anything to do with English, journalism, and philosophy. What is your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject is English/language arts! Favorite Movie/TV Show/Book My favorite book is Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover. My favorite TV show is Gilmore Girls. My favorite movie is Taylor Swift's Eras tour the movie. Do you have any pets? What is your editor position? This year I am working as submissions editor. Explain what your position/job is in the newspaper. So, the submissions editor adds all the articles, photographs, interviews, etc. to the final copy. I would also check for any errors, and make sure it overall looks nice and easy to read. I am the last person everything goes through to proof all of it and check the aesthetics of the final copy. What is it like being an editor? Being an editor is a complex job. You need to be able to communicate and use all software simultaneously with your team What are your goals for the newspaper this year? I just want people to enjoy it!

Can you explain what your job/position is on the newspaper? I'm the editor in chief, which basically means I am the second in command for the paper. (The first being Mr. Lawrence, of course!) I basically oversee the entire High School section of the paper, bring up any details that I think need to be changed or fixed, as well as reporting any issues to Mr Lawrence, among other jobs. What's it like being an editor? I honestly think it is very fun, I love writing and this just allows me to use those skills to make something great! It also allows me to practice working in a group setting, which is also helpful. I enjoy reading all of the articles and seeing everything and everyone come together to make a great paper. .Favorite TV Show/Movie/Book? My favorite TV show is a tie between Good Omens and Doctor Who, my favorite movie is Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, and my favorite book is also (surprise surprise...
