01 BIOGRAPHY

Margaretha Geertruida Zelle was born in 1876 in Leeuwarden in the north of the Netherlands, to wealthy parents. FAMILY: In the following years her father went bankrupt and he decided to divorce his wife, to remarry another woman. In 1891 her mother died, so the 4 children were separately sent to live with relatives. STUDIES: Mata goes to live with her uncle in Sneek to train as a primary school teacher, but there she suffers harassment, so she decided to leave school.

02 MARRIAGE

Rudolph Mac Leod

A complicated life led her to respond to a matrimonial ad published by a Dutch army officer: Rudolph Mac Leod. He was much older than her, an alcoholic, very jealous and had many debts.

03 INDONESIA

They moved to the island of Java and she began to attend traditional dances, then she decided to study them and join a dance company. After returning to Netherlands, Mata separated from her husband, so she returned to live with her uncle.

04 PARIS

1905: she performed a sacred dance in front of Monsieur Guimet, a collector of oriental art objects. He made her perform in the living rooms of powerful politicians. In fact, it will be Guimet who decides that her stage name will be Mata Hari, which means "Eye of Dawn" in Malay. Her success became international

When the German consul realized that Mata Hari was a double agent, he decided to blow her cover by sending an encrypted message to French secret services.In the message the Germans revealed Mata Hari's true identity. Mata Hari was arrested by the French police in her hotel room and placed in a prison cell. She was sentenced to death for treason.

09 DEATH

October 15 1917

That morning, she refused to be blindfolded to stare into the platoon's eyes.She blew a kiss and collapsed to the ground lifelessly, she was killed by three shots, while the other eight missed.
