How to Write a B2 Essay

What is an essay?

It is a short piece of writing on a particular subject, including information and discussion, and often expressing personal opinions. It is often written for a teacher, in an appropriate register and tone.

And a B2 essay?

It is the piece of writing you have to write in Writing Part 1 of the exam. In this part you will:

• be given the essay title;
• be given two ideas to write about;
• need to add one more idea of your own;
• need to give an opinion and support it with reasons;
• need to write between 140 and 190 words.

Your essay must be divided into paragraphs:

Useful advice

• you have to write a semi-formal text (try to avoid contractions like “don’t”)
• you should be quite impersonal, though conveying your own ideas (try to avoid expressions like “I think”, “In my opinion” etc.)

• use linking words to make your text cohesive
• use some set phrases
