Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" is one of the most iconic protest ballads of the 20th century. The ballad was written during the height of the Cold War in 1962, the ballad is a powerful and poetic call to action. It was written to urge listeners to take a stand against the injustices of the time.

QUESTION 2: What does the expression ''hard rain'' refer to?

The phrase ''hard rain'' in the title of the song is a metaphor for impending disaster or judgment, whether personal or social. Bob Dylan says that he will not let this get him down, he will not fall in with the rest, adopt a bleak outlook on life. In Lord Randal we find an handsome young man poisoned by his false "true-love" who is probably going to die, while in Dylan's version we find a radioactive dust in the air after a nuclear explosion. This version is more pessimistic because the desperation is global and it is the end of everything. With his ballad Dylan wants to express he is against the nuclear threat.

QUESTION 4: Do you think the song ends with a message of surrender or hope

The last stanza represents the great spotlight that finally illuminates the abyss; wherever he finds himself, our young hero will not turn away, he will willingly accept the fate of finding himself even in the most uncomfortable conditions, always presenting himself as the reflection of something beautiful that he himself has received.
