Educational System of USA

THE UNITED STATES EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

The american education system has 3 levels:
  • Elementary
  • Primary education
  • Secondary education

Normally students atend 12 grades of study over 12 calendar years of primary, elementary and secondary education, before graduating and earning a diploma, that makes them eligible for admission to higher education.

Education is mandatory until 16

The school year usually runs from early September until May or June (9 months) and is divided into "Quarters" or "Terms".

When a student enrolls in a public school a "folder" is opened for him and there's a continuous evaluation system through all grades.

EDUCATION

is an extremely important topic in every society and it’s really common to compare the educational system from different countries.

COMPULSORY EDUCATION

NEXT!

Spain

The compulsory education is from 6 to 16 years old, and it’s split in 3 stages:

Compulsory secondary education
After...
The school year is divided quarterly: early September to mid-June.

USA

Middle or Junior high school
Elementary school
High school
After...
The school year could be: half-year (late August to mid-May) or quarterly, too (end of September to end of June).

VS

Uses an alphabetical system: from “A” to “F”, being “C” the minimum passing grade. But, these marks aren’t that important for the final rating because they also consider the projects made through the year.

Are marked from 1 to 10, being 5 the minimum to pass. In addition, these qualifications are really valuable for the final rating

RATING

On practical skills and critical thinking. This is very helpful to evolve creativity and problem resolution.

On memorisation, which limits the creativity and critical thinking from its students.

FOCUS

EDUCATION

Both in the USA and Spain

Could be provided in state and private schools and through homeschooling, which is a 1.7% in the USA. Even though in Spain, homeschooling isn’t controlled legally but it isn’t forbidden either.

One thing that they have in common is the dress code, which is free as long as they wear appropriate clothes, except from private schools where students have to wear uniforms.

A TYPICAL DAY OF HIGH SCHOOL IN...

SPAIN
USA

Starts at about 8 a.m. until 3 p.m with a break in between. Students take six one-hour classes.

Starts at about 7 a.m. and ends around 3:00 p.m. with a spare hour for lunch. Students take six one-hour classes or four 90-minute classes, with ten-minute breaks between classes.

In both high schools, extra-curricular activities and sports are scheduled after school hours.

HOLIDAYS

USA
SPAIN

But depending on the autonomous community there could be more public holidays.

PISA 2018 report

SPAIN

Below average in Maths, Science and Reading skills.

USA

Above average except for Maths.

IN CONCLUSION

Both educational systems have their strengths and weaknesses

It seems that the American one has a better quality of education because it boosts the creative freedom and the analytical thinking.
