Genres of drama

Some famous plays across genres

  • Shakespeare's Hamlet (tragedy)
  • A Midsummer Night's Dream (comedy)
  • Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman (tragedy)
  • A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry (drama)
  • The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde (comedy)
Major genres of theatrical storytelling

Tragedy deals with serious or solemn themes, often ending in disaster and reflecting on mortality and human struggle. Comedy takes a lighter look at human weakness and folly, ultimately celebrating life and endings with reconciliation. Other genres include melodrama (clear villains/heroes), tragicomedy (blending tragedy and comedy), and farce (humor and anarchy).

Plot as the guiding framework of drama

Aristotle argued plot is the most important element, as drama requires plot to function but can exist without well-developed characters. The plot provides the base and sequence of essential actions. Character development unfolds through the events of the plot.

Freytag's pyramid shows the dramatic structure with rising and falling tension over time.

The 6 core structural elements of drama

Aristotle outlined the key elements of drama as character, plot, language, music, spectacle, and theme. Character brings the drama to life through action and dialogue. Plot is considered the most crucial element, shaping the cause and effect of events. Language establishes character authenticity. Music accompanies and enhances the mood. Spectacle includes visuals, sets, effects. Theme is the central idea.

Aristotle considered plot as the most important element of drama.

Playwrights as primary storytellers

The playwright makes key creative choices about the story, structure, characters, tone, and ending. They determine the subject matter, point of view, and dramatic shaping of the play through written dialogue and stage directions. Though many others collaborate to produce the play, it all begins with the playwright's vision.
