Clue

A group of men, including one named Guy Fawkes, planned to blow up (far saltare in aria) the Houses of Parliament. The men plotted to kill not only the King but also the Queen, the Prince, and every member of the government during the state opening of Parliament on November 5th, 1605.

Clue

The Yeomen were the monarch's bodyguards. Today, they have a purely ceremonial role. One of their most famous duties (compiti) is to search the cellars of the Palace of Westminster before the opening of Parliament.

They're not here!

Clue

Guy Fawkes was a Roman Catholic and was unhappy with the way the Catholics were treated. At the time, there were many conflicts between Protestants and Roman Catholics. Roman Catholics in England expected the King to treat them well because the King's mother was a Catholic. Instead, he ordered all Catholic priests (preti) to leave England. Guy Fawkes was furious.

Clue

The night before the opening of Parliament, soldiers caught Guy Fawkes in the cellar. There were 36 barrels of gunpowder in the basement under the House of Lords. They arrested him and took him to the Tower of London. After three days of torture, Fawkes told the names of the members of the group. They were all arrested for treason—plotting (tradimento-congiura) against the king and the country—and were imprisoned in the Tower.
