Lyrics

The weeknd is the stage name of Abel Tesfaye, born on the 16th of february in 1990, in Toronto, Canada. He is an R&B singer of great success. Son of Ethiopian immigrants, Abel had a complicated relationship with his father, as he left the family when Abel was only a child.

His early music influences were traditional Ethiopian music and the ‘King of Pop’, Michael Jackson. He began his career in 2009 by dropping tracks anonymously on Youtube.

In 2011, he released three mixtapes: ‘House of Balloons’, ‘Thursday’ and ‘Echoes’. They were downloaded eight million times, an amazing audience for an artist without even a debut album to their name.

In 2012, he signed with Republic Records and re-released his three mixtapes as a compilation album named ‘Trilogy’.

He then dropped his debut studio album, ‘Kiss Land’, in 2013. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard chart and sold thousands of copies in the first week. After the release of ‘Kiss Land’, The Weeknd wrote a song for the film ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, ‘Earned It’,

In august 2015, Abel released his second album ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’. He played in multiple festivals to promote it, such as Lollapalooza. ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’ made The Weeknd win his first Grammy Award for ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album’.

At the end of 2016, he dropped his third album, ‘Starboy’. The main song in this album, ‘Starboy’, became number one on the US Billboard chart, the second song of Abel to reach that.

‘After Hours’ was his fourth album released in 2020. The first two singles ‘Heartless’ and ‘Blinding Lights’ peaked at number one on the Billboard chart.

Last year, in 2022, he dropped his fifth album ‘Dawn FM’ and started his world tour which is supposed to end in December of this year, in New Zealand.

He is not going to continue performing as ‘The Weeknd’, as he has said in many recent interviews. He thinks about closing that chapter in his life. He will probably continue his career as ‘Abel’.
