Info
Connected
- Typically use WIFI to connect to cloud
- 'Heartbeat' connects periodically (typically every hour)
- Updates (events, sync, device status) can be delayed until heartbeat
Offline/Disconnected
- Does not connect to cloud
- Relies on credentials to provide access rules
- May not include method for backhaul (upload of status/events)
- Popular in multi-family when reliable WIFI is not present
- Credentials can be enrolled at the lock, or (in some cases) generated via algorithm for guest access
- While the device does not connect to the cloud, RemoteLock can create guests using the process linked above for supported offline locks
Online
- Device is always connected to cloud
- Wired doors use ethernet - always on
- Smart locks typically use connection hub to extend battery life (ZWave, BLE, Zigbee*) or may have built-in WIFI capabilities (ex. Schlage Encode, Yale Assure)
- Updates often occur within seconds
*Note: zigbee is not supported on RemoteLock
