Pyramid of hate
The Pyramid of Hate visually demonstrates the possible rapid progression from biased thoughts to hate-driven violence, offering a sobering portrayal of the dangerous consequences of unchecked hatred. It aims to help individuals identify various forms of hatred, understand the stages of its escalation, and emphasize the critical importance of intervention in the face of hate. This endeavor stems from the understanding that bias-motivated violence and genocide are merely the visible outcomes of a deeper issue. Beneath the surface lie ingrained attitudes, behaviors, actions, and inactions that, if left unaddressed, create an environment conducive to further escalation. Bias-Motivated Violence
Systemic Discrimination
Acts of Bias
Biased Attitudes
Bias-Motivated Violence
- Threats;
- Desecration;
- Vandalism;
- Arson;
- Assault;
- Rape;
- Murder;
- Terrorism.
In the absence of intervention, unmitigated discrimination can lead to incidents of violence driven by bias in media representation, for example. These incidents encompass property vandalism, menacing actions, physical assaults, as well as more extreme acts like arson, acts of terrorism, and homicide.
Systemic Discrimination
- Criminal justice disparities;
- Inequitable school resource distribution;
- Housing segregation;
- Inequitable employment opportunities;
- Wage disparities;
- Voter restrictions and suppression;
- Unequal media representation.
After the establishment of biased perspectives and actions, a progression towards organized and systematic discrimination can ensue.
Acts of Bias
- Non-inclusive language;
- Insensitive remarks;
- Microaggressions;
- Biased and belittling jokes;
- Cultural appropriation;
- Social avoidance and/or exclusion;
- Name-calling;
- Ridicule;
- Bullying;
- Slurs and epithets;
- Dehumanization.
In response to bias attitudes, we may develop biased emotions towards a particular demographic, potentially resulting in behaviors such as harassment, singling out individuals as scapegoats, telling discriminatory jokes, subjecting others to ridicule, and engaging in derogatory name-calling.

Biased Attitudes
- Stereotyping;
- Fear of differences;
- Justifying biases by seeking out likeminded people;
- Seeking out information to confirm one’s existing beliefs and/or biases;
- Lack of self-reflection or awareness of privilege.
The foundational layer of the pyramid unravels a spectrum of biased notions that pervade our daily experiences, manifesting in a variety of places such as educational institutions, professional environments, neighborhoods, and social gatherings. They manifest through linguistic exclusion, the perpetuation of caricatures, subtle acts of hostility, or unkind expressions.
Genocide
- Killing members of the group;
- Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
- Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
- Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
- Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
The top level of the pyramid is Genocide. The United Nations, in 1948, provided a definition of genocide as comprising any of the subsequent acts, carried out with the purpose of annihilating, either entirely or partially, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious collective, and also including:
