Carl Woese foi um microbiologista conhecido pelo seu trabalho revolucionário na classificação de seres vivos. Começou por investigar o RNA ribossômico, uma molécula presente em todos os organismos, responsável pela síntese de proteínas. Uma das principais contribuições de Woese foi a descoberta do domínio Archaea, uma nova categoria de organismos que estava previamente desconhecida.
