Backpack

First Clue

Those crafty humans have hidden the first clue in a book.. The book seems to be locked with a key, but on the back cover you find some highlighted text. The Martians don't know how to interpret human similes. You can make out just a bit of the faded text.

It reads: "You use me to see. I sound like one letter, but I'm spelled with three" Solve the Riddle to find the clue. When you think you have the riddle solved turn the page.

Backpack

Which of these answers the riddle on the previous page?

mmm

A. Box

B. Eye

C. Spy

D. Toe

Backpack

Let's go!

You figured it out!

They want to know how you figured that out so quickly! They start badgering you with questions about your detective skills.

You remind them that it was really very easy, because similes...

A. Make everything rhyme

B. Aren't really that hard

C. Compare using "like or "as"

Backpack

Let's go!

You wrack your brain for anywhere that resembles and eye on the new human base camp....

Back at it!

You remind the Martians that daylight won't last forever and you'd like to get this solved for them before the lieutenant rings the dinner bell!

The statue of Ray Bradbury seems like a good place to look for an eye...

The playground in town seemed kind of suspicious today...

Backpack

Woow!!

You put the book in your backpack You climb up and search around. Just as you're about to give up you find it! A tiny crumpled piece of paper!

Yeah!

You solved the first clue!

Second Clue

You found a piece of paper hiding in the eye of the statue!

Backpack

You jump down and scratch your head. What in the world could this metaphor mean? Where is the next clue? The hot Martian sun beats down on you as you think, and then, you jump to your feet and run as fast as you can to the center of town to find...

Second Clue

As the Martians jump in excitement around you, you try to read the scribbled note. It reads: "You must hide the items with the only one who can keep them hidden. He is the only ray of hope for us"

Backpack

B. Townhall

there is a picture of the Mayor and his sons. The metaphor was clearly referring to a family member!

A. The Sundial!

Of course! The metaphor is comparing this person to the sun!

Backpack

Let's go!

As you look up you notice writing on the underside of the sundial. "The wind howled in the night The stars winked in the sky This dial points right Where the humans all fly"

Phew all that running is making you tured!

You arrive at the Sundial earlier than the Martians. You decide to sit under the huge monument for a moment and remind yourself that more riddles are sure to come. "I sure hope the next one offers up a decent challenge, these have been easy so far... Too easy."

Backpack

Where should you search based off the clue?

B. Rocket Launch Pad

A. Peach Trees

Let's try the rocket launch pad because that's how humans fly!

Let's try the forest of peach trees because wind howls there!

Backpack

Trust me

Hold on!

You assure them that you know that wind doesn't howl, and stars don't wink. You reassure them that these are just examples of...

Just as you're about to jump to your feet, the Martians begin questioning your idea! How do you even know what that poem meant? One of them confronts you and says "Wind does not howl, and stars do not wink. Maybe dear detective, you're not as smart as you think!"

A. Conjunctions B. Personification C. Rhyming Words

Backpack

Awesome!!

You add the note from the statue to your backpack! You and the Martians head over to the rocket launch pad!

Yeah!

Hopefully we get home before dark!

Backpack

To the rockets

These things are huge! Where do you even begin? "Let's split up and look for anything out of the ordinary!"

Backpack

Pasted to the inside of a rusted old engine reads an ominous note: "The bells they all chime, You could say that I'm smitten. The last clue to find is The best book ever written"

The Martians following you limber around each rocket, scratching at paint and reaching into fuel tanks (which you remind them is rather dangerous). Finally someone shouts "OVER HERE!"

Backpack

"The best book ever written...", you think to yourself. "That's a bit hard to define, seems like an extreme exaggeration to me". One of the smaller Martians walks up to you and puts a slender hand on your shoulder. Linnl is his name. He rubs at his temples and seems to be trying to recall a long lost memory. "hyper bowl", he says. "hyper bowl...?" you repeat. "huh?" He simply nods his head. What could he mean?!

the riddle is an example of alliteration

the riddle is an example of hyberbole

Backpack

keep it up!!

Of course he meant HYPERBOLE! You added the note from the Rockets to your backpack!

Yeah!

maybe it will be useful

Fourth Clue

THe best book ever written??

Backpack

Of course

But if it's an exaggeration, then where can you look for the "best book ever written"? The title seems familiar somehow. But where have you seen it?

The locked book!

Wait, take a look in your backpack

Check items in your backpack and use the flashlight to look for the book you put there earlier. Once you find it click on the book

Backpack

"The loom works well and it complements the furniture." "Huge, glowing blue gems can be used as mosaic stones" "They have replaced their furniture with more comfortable items" "We played the flute, and danced to the music"

You hang your head in defeat. The humans have just been leading you and the Martians on a wild goose chase. What will you do now? Linnl turns to look at you and points to the book's lock. It seems to be unlocked with a combination of 4 letters. You turn the book over, searching for clues. On the book's binding are 4 sentences.

"The loom works well and it complements the furniture." "Huge, glowing blue gems can be used as mosaic stones" "They have replaced their furniture with more comfortable items" "We played the flute, and danced to the music"

"Thank goodness I took notes and participated in my 7th grade ELA class at CCA", you tell Linnl. "My teacher taught us all about parts of speech! I just need to match up the bold words to the part of speech that matches each letter on the lock!" Directions: Look at each bold word in the sentence and decide if it is a Noun, Verb, Adjective, or Conjunction. The right combination will open the locked book! When you're ready move the card and choose the best answer.

Backpack

"That's a rocket number", you tell Linnll. The group comb through the rockets until they find one with the number matching the Key.

Do you try it?

You find a book with no pages! "Not another mystery!", you say to yourself. By now you're starting to feel the rumblings of hunger and would love to go home and rest. You look inside and find a keycard. Written on the key is a serial number "R3460"

Clue One

Congratulations!

Wow, you got it!

You unlock the cargo hatch and out tumble the loom, flute, furniture, and gems that were all stolen! The Martians are so happy you helped them recover their items! They invite you to a Martian dance party to celebrate. You decide to attend but end up leaving earlier than you thought. It turns out that Martian parties only consist of purple carrots side dishes, green flower garlands, and peaceful flute music. You'd rather go home and eat from your deepfreeze. Besides, there's something strange about those Martians anyway. They seem familiar somehow...
