Research

Let's discuss the research regarding vocabulary acquisition.

Research

Beck, McKeown, and Kucan (2002) identified that vocabulary consists of three levels.

Hover near the bottom of each level for a pop-up of additional information.

Research

Vocabulary is a strong indicator of success (Marzano & Pickering, 2005) because knowledge about a concept is rooted in the vocabulary.

Context Clues

TEKS-Aligned

Morphology

Multiple-Meaning Words

How can students utilize context clues to show their understanding of a vocabulary word?

Why is it important to teach vocabulary words addressed directly in the TEKS?

What's the importance of including Greek & Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes in vocabulary instruction?

What is the importance of teaching the content-specific meanings of hononyms?

Research

Low-income students have a lower vocabulary than middle and upper-class families.

In grades 3-12, an average student is likely to learn approximately 3,000 new vocabulary words each year. (Nagy and Anderson, 1984)

5 year old low SES children score 2 years behind on standardized language development tests. (Fernald, 2010)

"By age 3 the children in professional families would have heard more than 30 million words, the children in working class families 20 million, and the children in welfare families 10 million." (Hart and Risley, 1995)

Research

How should I prioritize vocabulary words?

Where do I locate academic word lists?

What if an academic word list isn't provided?

Tier 3 & Tier 2 words can easily be located in passages using a tool called VocabGrabber. VocabGrabber allows you to copy and paste passages and articles, etc. and then sort and filter the vocabulary words based on your needs. Click to watch a short video on how to use it.

doodleloops

Doodleloops are shapes which students can turn into something completely different and use to show their understanding of a word/topic. They stimulate creativity and encourage critical writing, can be used as a bellringer, exit ticket, an extension activity for early finishers, a station activity, or can be used to build a visual word wall. Click on each icon to see an example. The book is available from your campus IC.

Best Practices

magazine cutouts

This activity is similar to Doodleloops but uses images from magazines or online images rather than requiring students to do the drawing. Students locate images that match a particular vocabulary word/topic and caption the image to show their understanding. It has the same benefits as Doodleloops and can be used in the same way. Click on each icon to see an example.

Best Practices

PICTURE CARDS

In this activity, teachers create a slide with multiple, random pictures. Then, give the students a vocabulary word and have them choose a picture that they believe most closely represents that word and why. For example, consider the word from the Frayzano Model in an earlier slide. The word was "zoomorphic." If you were a student, which slide would you choose? Which slide would you choose for "prism"? How about "devastated"?

Best Practices

Visual Non-glossary

Visual Non-Glossary is a collection of structured visuals and vocabulary words with conversation prompts that allow students to analyze the visuals and discuss with their classmates. The district has purchased licenses for math, science, and social studies. Click on the icon below to visit the site. If you do not know your login, contact your campus administrator or instructional coach.

You've done a great job!!

We hope you continue learning in another module.

Level 2 Vocabulary Assessments
  • Cloze or multiple-choice assessments that incorporate context clues
  • require students to identify the meaning of the word and then apply it (mid-level thinking)

Got an idea?

Let the communication flow!

With Genially templates, you can include visual resources to wow your audience. You can also highlight a particular sentence or piece of information so that it sticks in your audience’s minds, or even embed external content to surprise them: Whatever you like! Do you need more reasons to create dynamic content? No problem! 90% of the information we assimilate is received through sight and, what’s more, we retain 42% more information when the content moves.

  • Generate experiences with your content.
  • It’s got the Wow effect. Very Wow.
  • Make sure your audience remembers the message.

Students should record the vocabulary word in the center and teachers should say something such as, "What do you think this word mean? Why? Discuss with your group and then we'll discuss as a class in a few minutes." Teachers should give students the opportunity to have conversations so the teacher can listen and gauge prior knowledge/level of understanding. When whole group discuss begins, the teacher can use some of the student discussion comments.

Correct!

Next

Transform boundaries are created when two tectonic plates move back and forth against each other on fault lines creating earthquakes.

Next

Based on the class discussion, create an agreed-upon class definition and have students record it in the top, left quadrant. The dictionary definition of "zoomorphism" is a literary device of giving animal-like qualities to anything that is not an animal such as humans, gods, and inanimate objects.

Students from professional class families will have heard 30 million words by the age of 3 whereas students from low SES families will have only heard 10 million for a difference of 20 million. 20 million also represents the number of words students from middle class families will have heard by age 3.

Next

Low SES children will have only heard 10 million words by the age of 3.

How to Earn Credit

1. Complete the required Academic Vocabulary Online Module Reflection Form located in the Google Classroom. 2. Complete the following optional assignment: You can either earn extra credit by completing the assignment listed in the Google Classroom OR by scheduling an observation with your campus IC to observe the implementation of your learning.

If you have any questions, please contact your campus IC.

Level 1 Vocabulary Assessments
  • typically basic matching or multiple choice assessments
  • ask students to identify the word meaning (low-level thinking)
  • these types of assessments should be used judiciously, if at all
  • if you shouldn't teach simple word-definition acquisition, then you shouldn't assess that way

30 million represents the number of words heard by students from professional class families.

Next

Level 3 Vocabulary Assessments
  • assessments discussed in the presentation such as Doodleloops, Magazine Cutouts, Picture Cards, etc.
  • can incorporate the use of technology such as through the use of Google Slides, Pear Deck's Flashcard Factory, etc.
  • require students to create something in order to show their understanding of the word meaning (high-level thinking)

Depilation is the process of removing hair using a razor or a chemical depilatory product such as Nair.

Next

Finally, students use relevance to create and caption a picture. The caption should always include the vocabulary word. Teachers can also integrate technology into this activity by using Pear Deck's Flashcard Factory. You will learn about Flashcard Factory later in the module.

Travel throughout Europe is facilitated by an extensive railroad system. This system is an example of which type of industry? a. retail b. service c. agricultural d. manufacturing

This question if from a 6th grade social studies TEKS: Define and give examples of agricultural, wholesale, retail, manufacturing (goods), and service industries. The highlighted words in the question come directly from the TEKS and need to be taught directly in class in order for students to be successful.

Lead4Ward's Instructional Strategies Playlist has multiple activities that can be modified for vocabulary review/games.

Vocabulary Games #1 take little to no prep time and can be implemented and completed in just a few minutes. They would be appropriate to use for the last 5 minutes of class or modified for an extended review time.

Vocabulary Games #1

This model for vocabulary is called the "Frayzano" Model because it is a mash-up of the Frayer Model and Marzano's model.

Socio-economic status is not a student's destiny. However, the research illustrated here shows that it is going to impact students. It is especially important for this community and explains how students with whom we work "get behind." When elementary teachers are concerned about a student's ability to read, they are typically referring to fluency. However, when secondary teachers say students "can't read," they are typically (but not always) referring to a student's ability to comprehend. When fluency isn't the issue, a student's comprehension is tied to a lack vocabulary knowledge. This is especially true of those on a CTE track. Most entry-level materials in trade industries have a reading level of 1270-1500 (on a scale of 0-2000) while the average freshman reads at a lexile of 940-1210. Some CTE texts can have a higher lexile level than physics and history texts. However, literacy instruction tends to focus more on literature than on texts which are information or technical in nature.

Great Job!

"Often, this root pass is covered with two hot passes and a cap or 'face' pass with E7018 rods."

This sentence is from a welding textbook and, unless you are familiar with welding, it's likely like reading a foreign language. Words like root, pass, cap, face, and rods are all familiar but not in the context in which they are being used here. If you were to attempt to "translate" this sentence using the commonly known definitions of each of those words, you'd be wrong. But, if you know their academic meaning in terms of welding, then you can translate the sentence. In this case, a pass is a single progression of welding along the joint. A root pass is the first weld bead placed in a weld joint in a multi-purpose weld. A hot pass helps to smooth or resurface the root pass and a cap or face pass is the final weld bead in a weld joint.

Vocabulary Games #2 take more prep time and take longer to implement and complete. They would be appropriate to use for an extended review time.

Vocabulary Games #2

Next

Electrolysis is the process of hair removal with the use of an electric current.

Next

After allowing students time to discuss what they think the word means, ask some probing/guiding questions if they cannot make any connections to the word. Stress Greek and Latin roots if appropriate. For example, in this word there are 2 roots. "Zoo" means animal (like going to the zoo). "Morph" means to form/change like in "metamorphic" or "metamorphosis."

Next

Pear Deck's Flashcard Factory is an engaging way to use technology in vocabulary instruction/practice. Click to watch a short video.

Other platforms such as Quizlet, Quizizz, Kahoot, and Knoword can be customized by teachers or students for vocabulary instruction/practice.

While Tier 1 words are high-frequency, they are basic sight words that are not academic in nature and therefore not necessary for comprehension.

Next

Next

A process called _________ uses intensive light to destroy the growth cells of the hair follices. a. electrolysis b. epilation c. depilation d. photoepilation

This question is from a cosmetology textbook and illustrates the importance of including morphemes (individual units of meaning of a word) in vocabulary instruction. Knowing the roots of these words can help a student to answer the question correctly even if they don't "know" the answer. Hover over each root and see if you can determine the correct answer.

Next, students should attempt to generate their own examples based on the definition. The teacher may need to guide this discuss and provide some examples first. These examples should have relevance to the students so they can make connections. Many superheroes are examples of zoomorphism because their superpower is that of an animal.

Students rarely encounter academic words in isolation. Therefore, it is important for them to utilize reading comprehension strategies, including context clues, to determine the meanings of words and/or to show their understanding of words. This can be accomplished with the addition of Cloze activities into vocabulary instruction. Cloze activities can also help develop metacognitive skills when students are asked to explain the "clues" in the text that helped them fill in the blank. Click on the link below to see an example of a Cloze-type assessment. Based on the highlighted context clues, how many blanks can you fill in?

Divergent boundaries pull apart, or diverge, to create large gaps in earth's surface such as mid-ocean ridges and rifts. In addition, folding happens at convergent boundaries when the plates push together and up forming mountains.
