Community Project
- Anchor- Students will be introduced to the lesson by allowing them to watch the video below.
Each student will watch the video on his or laptop computer. After watching the video, students will be able to create and develope ideas for their social science project. Students will complete Activity Worksheet 1. The teacher will collect and review these worksheets to form groups assignments based on similar ideas. There should be no more than four students to each group.
2. Task- Teacher provide each student with a project outline. This outline will provide the students with beginning to ending tasks, deadlines, format, and the requirements for project submission. The teacher will review the project outline with the students to make sure each individual clearly understands what is expected to complete the community project.
3. Directions- The teacher will provide directions to the students to help them begin on the tasks in the project outline. This will keep the students on track as they complete the tasks. Weekly the students will have to access the online progress tracker to check off the completion of their weekly tasks. This will need to be completed every Friday morning. The teacher will used the online progress tracker to ensure that the students are following directions and staying on task.
4. Student Choice- Students will be allowed to share their thoughts amongst their group members on the responsibilites and task each person will have to complete the community project. The teacher will allow the students 30 minutes to discuss. Students will need to complete acitivity worksheet 2 and submit to teacher.
5. Student Inquiry- Students will be allowed to allowed to begin researching their community project by using their computers. Students will be allowed to ask the teacher questions on what resources or online information may be helpful in completing their project. Students will be fully engaged in locating information through the internet, newspapers, magazines and other online resources. Students will need to complete woksheet 3 and submit to teacher.****Click on paragraphs above for additional tip on getting started.
6. Collaboration and Teamwork- Each day the students will be allowed to work in groups to complete the community project. Students will display their roles as leaders and team effort. Each group will be graded on their level of team efforts and his or her responsibilty on completing assigned task.
7. Teacher Coaching and Feedback- The teacher will be checking the online activity progress tracker. The teacher will use this as a guide to know if the group is having problems with completing and staying on task. The teacher can also provide suggestions where needed. The teacher will check the tracker every Friday evening.
8. Student Reflection- Once students recevied the feedback via the online progress activity, the groups will be allowed to determine where they need to make improvements. The students will also use the online Weekly Newletter via Flipgrid to share comments and ideas of what they are learning during the project amongst their peers.
9. Public Presentation- The students will be required to create a newletters using Flipgrid. This newsletter will need to include pictures of the community project.
Tip of the day. Find a need in your community. When deciding on a service project to complete, it's important that you look to your community and consider what needs there are in your area. You can contact nonprofit organizations in your area or visit their website. Many nonprofits have a list of project needs and welcome groups of volunteers.
