What do you know about Sustainability?

"There are countless examples throughout human history where civilization has damaged it's own environment and seriously affected it's survival chances"

Jared Diamond

Meet the Three Pillars of Sustainability

Economic Development

Social Development

Environmental Protection

  • It defines how we should study and protect ecosystems, air quality, integrity, and sustainability of our resources
  • focus on the elements that place stress on the environment.
  • developing technology and biotechnology is key to this sustainability, and protecting the environment of the future from potential damage that technological advances could potentially bring.

There are strong programs of legislation in place to ensure that people's health and wellness are strongly protected

  • maintaining access to basic resources without compromising the quality of life.
  • Sustainable housing and how we can better build the homes we live in from sustainable materials.
  • The final element is education- encouraging people to participate in environmental sustainability

The number 1 issue that proves most problematic as most people disagree with

  • How it will affect businesses and employability.
  • The supply and demand market is consumerist and modern life requires a lot of resources every single day
  • for the sake of the environment, getting what we consume under control is essential.

Goal 15 - Life on Land

  • Goal 15 is all about working to conserve life on land
  • To protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of ecosystems
  • Halt diversity loss and land degradation
  • Forests are especially at risk, making up around 31% of the land

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the study of how natural systems function, remain diverse, and produce everything they need for the ecology to remain balanced It also acknowledges that human civilization takes resources to sustain our modern-day life. Sustainability considers how we might live in harmony with the natural world around us, protecting it from damage and destruction.

DATA

  • Forests cover almost 31% of Earth, and contain 80% of terrestrial species
  • Agricultural expansion causes 90% of deforestation
  • Almost 1 million species of plants and animals are threatened with extinction, which is a record-high

The Game

Goal 15; Life on Land...What is this game about?

  • Educates the gamer about sustainability using different biomes to explore from
  • Rebuild worlds with humans and animals
  • Learn about sustaining the environment while building a biome.

"My name is Kevin, and I am a Business Transfer student at Northern Essex Community College. Sustainability is important because it leads to a better quality of life overall. Our environment and available resources are suffering as a result of unsustainable harvesting. It is our responsibility to take action."

"I am a business Management major at Northern Essex in my last semester. Composting can be met in a few years by families focusing on preserving and even utilizing their compost/ scraps by having chickens or even gardening to help reduce the climate impact.

"I am a business major at Northern Essex. I think that making small changes to your everyday life makes a big difference when it comes to sustainability. Some things that you could do are using reusable water bottles, and recycling."

Both countries are committed to environmental protection, recognizing the importance of sustainability in preserving biodiversity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting the responsible use of natural resources."

"I'm an apprentice HVAC project manager studying at Polytech Nancy. With this project we want the viewers to be aware of the global balance of our world."

Juliette

I am a IT major student at Polytech Nancy. This project allowed me to develop technical skills (javaFX), organizational and communication skills.

Things to do......

  1. Find a Goal 15 charity you want to support
  2. Don’t shop for pets! Visit your local animal shelter and adopt an animal there
  3. Recycle paper, glass, plastic, metal and old electronics.
  4. Reduce your use of paper. Avoid printing and substitute it with electronic devices or carriers.
  5. Compost. Composting food scraps can reduce climate impact while also recycling nutrients.
  6. Don’t use pesticides. To protect and sustain the quality of soil, don’t use chemicals while growing plants.
  7. Don’t buy products tested on animals: Check the labels on the products you buy.
