Topic Selection

The base of the CLIL Pyramid is Topic Selection. This is the starting point for planning a unit. The content subject, which is going to be the core of all the lessons and materials, needs to be selected (Meyer, 2010).

Choice of Media

The second level of the CLIL Pyramid is Choice of Media, which incorporates Study Skills and Input-Scaffolding. When planning a unit, it is important to incorporate multimodal input across the unit. Ideally, this input integrates different learning styles and various language skills. The amount and type of scaffolding needed will depend on the input that is chosen. We need to find the right balance of support to make the input accessible for students, while keeping the content challenging and motivating (Meyer, 2010).

Multimodal Input

Solar System Unit Plan
  • Solar System Diagram
  • Solar System Song
  • Solar System Video
A visual representation of the Solar System
A song with key characteristics of each planet.
An animated tour of the Solar System.

Input Scaffolding

Solar System Unit Plan
  • Planet Facts Graphic Organizer
  • Solar System Flashcards
  • Solar System Diagram

Task-Design

The third level of the CLIL Pyramid is Task-Design, which encompasses: Cognition and Communication and Output Scaffolding. Following the principles of Cognition and Communication, task design should promote higher order thinking skills and authentic communication between students. The type of task (poster, presentation, etc) will determine the amount and type of output scaffolding that students will need to successfully demonstrate what they know (Meyer, 2010).

Cognition and Communication

Solar System Unit Plan
  • Solar System Quiz
  • Planet Puzzle
  • Word wall game
Think, pair, share!
Students will collaborate with a partner to solve the puzzles.
Students will work in groups to order the planets correctly.

Output Scaffolding

Solar System Unit Plan
  • Kinesthetic Review of Solar System
  • Graphic organizer to prepare project

CLIL Workout

The top of the CLIL Pyramid is the CLIL Workout. It is here that key concepts and language elements are reviewed at the end of the unit (Meyer, 2010).

These flashcards can be used through out the unit to facilitate understanding as needed. They can also be displayed as a word wall in the classroom.

To demonstrate what they have learned, students will create a model of the Solar System, including the sun, moon and planets. They can use a variety of materials such as play doh, balls, etc. Students will present their model to the class.

Students will use this graphic organizer to review the names and correct order of the planets.

Students will use this graphic organizer to write key facts (colors, size, hot/cold) about each planet while watching the Solar System Song video.

This diagram can be displayed in the classroom for students to reference.

Students will wear a planet costume and stand in the correct order of the planets. Using the costume as scaffolding, students will revise the adjectives to describe the planet costume they are wearing. For example: hot, cold, red, blue, big, small etc.
