Week 4: Game - Healthcare Medical Terminology

start

Dr. Chichi Echezona-Johnson

Introduction

The goal for this game is to identify the the anatomical terms, word parts, prefixes, suffixes, and medical conditions relating to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

The circulatory system and the respiratory system work closely together to ensure that organ tissues receive enough oxygen. Oxygen is required for cellular functions. The air breathed in and held in the lungs is transferred to the blood. The blood is circulated by the heart, which pumps the oxygenated blood from the lungs to the body. Additionally, the two body systems work together to remove carbon dioxide, which is a metabolic waste product. Cardiopulmonary disease is the medical term used to describe a range of serious disorders that affect the heart (“cardio-”) and lungs (“-pulmonary”). The two primary tobacco-related cardiopulmonary diseases are Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD).

Angina

Hypercapnia

Answer

Correct!

Angina, also known as angina pectoris, is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when part of your heart muscle does not get enough oxygen-rich blood. It is a common symptom of coronary heart disease, which develops when the arteries of the heart become partially or totally blocked. Hypercapnia is the increase in partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) above 45 mmHg. Carbon dioxide is a metabolic product of the many cellular processes within the body, and there are several physiological mechanisms that the body has to moderate of carbon dioxide levels.

You're doing great. Next question:What is a medical condition that makes someone stop breathing for a short time?

Hypertension

Apnea

Pneumonia

Answer

Correct!

High blood pressure, also referred to as hypertension, is when your blood pressure, the force of blood flowing through your blood vessels, is consistently too high. Apnea is the temporary cessation of breathing, especially during sleep. There is obstruction and narrowing of the trachea. Pneumonia is an infection that affects one or both lungs. It causes the air sacs, or alveoli, of the lungs to fill up with fluid or pus. Bacteria, viruses, or fungi may cause pneumonia.

This is a procedure to look directly at the airways in the lungs using a thin lighted tube.

Spirometry

Angiogram

Laryngoscopy

Bronchoscopy

Answer

Correct!

Laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy are two procedures that may be done together. They let the healthcare provider see inside the air passages in the throat and lungs. A laryngoscopy looks at the throat and larynx, or vocal cords. Bronchoscopy is a procedure to look directly at the airways in the lungs using a thin, lighted tube (bronchoscope). The bronchoscope is put in the nose or mouth. It is moved down the throat and windpipe (trachea), and into the airways. An angiogram is a type of X-ray used to examine blood vessels. Spirometry is the most common type of pulmonary function or breathing test. This test measures how much air you can breathe in and out of your lungs, as well as how easily and fast you can the blow the air out of your lungs. Your doctor may order spirometry if you have wheezing, shortness of breath, or a cough.

Test 2

What is another name for red blood cells?

Hyperoxia

Erythrocyte

Aorta

Answer

Correct!

Hyperoxia is where the body has too much oxygen in its system. Aorta is the main blood vessel through which oxygen and nutrients travel from the heart to organs throughout the body. Erythrocyte is a cell that contains hemoglobin and can carry oxygen to the body. Also called a red blood cell (RBC). The reddish color is due to the hemoglobin.

Test 2

This is a name for any infection caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcus.

Pneumococcal

Pneumonia

Phlegm

Answer

Correct!

Pneumococcal [noo-muh-KOK-uhl] disease is a name for any infection caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcus. Pneumococcal infections can range from ear and sinus infections to pneumonia and bloodstream infections. There are vaccines to help prevent pneumococcal disease. Pneumonia is an infection that affects one or both lungs. It causes the air sacs, or alveoli, of the lungs to fill up with fluid or pus. Bacteria, viruses, or fungi may cause pneumonia. Phlegm is a specific type of mucus that originates in the lungs and throat. It's slightly thicker than the mucus that's produced in your nose and sinuses. Another name for phlegm is sputum.

Test 2

This is related to the muscles of the heart.

Bronchus

Alveoli

Myocardial

Respiratory system

Answer

Correct!

The muscles of the heart, termed the myocardium, make up the middle and thickest layer of the heart wall. This layer lies between the single-cell endocardium layer, which lines the inner chambers, and the outer epicardium, which makes up part of the pericardium that surrounds and protects the heart. Bronchus (large airway that leads from the trachea (windpipe) to a lung). Alveoli - tiny air sacs of the lungs which allow for rapid gaseous exchange.

Test 3

Surely you know the answer to this question: This is related to the respiratory system.

Coronary

Pulmonary

Arteriosclerosis

Answer

Correct!

Arteriosclerosis occurs when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body (arteries) become thick and stiff — sometimes restricting blood flow to the organs and tissues. Coronary relates to the the arteries which surround and supply the heart while pulmonary relates to the lungs.

2/5

You're doing great. Air is outside the lungs in this disease.

Dyspnea

Pneumothorax

Hypercapnia

Answer

Correct!

Hypercapnia, also called hypercarbia, is when you have too much carbon dioxide (CO2) in your blood. A pneumothorax is a collection of air outside the lung but within the pleural cavity. It occurs when air accumulates between the parietal and visceral pleura inside the chest. Dyspnea is the medical term for difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. It is a symptom of many conditions that affect the respiratory system.
