Division 1

Diverse and Flexible Learning

• All courses and POS materials used in schools in Alberta must reflect diverse nature and the heritage of society in Alberta

• Promote understanding and respect for others and honour and respect the common values and beliefs of Albertans.

• must not promote or foster social change through violent action or disobedience of laws.

The Minister may do the following: - Prescribe courses or programs of study - Prescribe requirements for the granting of credits, certificates and diplomas -Authorize learning and teaching resources for use in schools - Approve any course, program of study or learning and teaching resource

Scenario: You are a teacher and you have just been notified you have a new student joining your class. The new student requires a wheelchair. How can you ensure this student feels welcome and included in the classroom ? How can your students promote inclusion in every class?

Division 2

Charter Schools:

Application to Establish Charter School

• The person in charge must apply to the Education Minister to get permission to open a charter school under a society

• Once the minster recieves the appilcation for the new charter school every school board in the area is notified that a new school is coming to the area

• The application must be filled out and contain the pertinent informaton to open a new school.

Charter Schools:

Operation of charter schools

• The Minster of Education must approve the operations at the school

• The Minster approves the items that the school must have

• The school can not charge fees that are not under the Act

Westmount Charter School In Calgary

• The charter school can not be assocaiated with a religious group

Scenario Question 2

Scenario: A charter school is accused of misusing public funds and inflating its test scores. An investigation reveals that the school has been hiring unqualified teachers and has been fabricating test results. The school is being shut down and its students are being transferred to other schools in the area. How would the parents who have their kids in this school feel about it being closed down?

Private Schools:

Recognition of Private Schools

• Gives Parents choice in their Childs Education

• The school must follow the Alberta Education Act

• The person in charge of the Private School must ensure the standards of achievement are met

• Teachers must have certification of the province to teach at the Private School

Private Schools

Edmonton Acadamy

• When a private school is proposed to the minister there are expectations that need to be met.
• The school must provide approved educational programs and meet the standard of student achievement.
• The school must go through regular evaluations and monitoring and meet all health, saftey and building standards.
• The school will be managed and operated according to the Act.
• A school may become accredited if the requirements are met.

• The minister can cancel or suspend the registration or accrediatation of a school
