Narrative Writing 5.05

Your next writing prompt is to write a story about a time a character solved a problem. This can be based on your own real life experiences, or it can be completely fantasy! Use your imagination to think about a big problem your character will face. How will they solve this problem in a unique way? The first part of your grade is based on the graphic organizer. Here is Ninovan's sample! Notice that Ninovan did not focus on complete sentences or spelling. His main goal was to develop ideas about the characters, setting, the problem, events, and the solution.

Next is the rough draft!

The next step is to turn your graphic organizer into a 3-paragraph draft! Paragraph 1: The Beginning (3-4 sentences) 1. Start with a sentence that introduces the setting. (Ex: Long ago in a far away kingdom... or One dark and stormy night...) 2. Introduce and describe your character. Notice that Ninovan mentioned that Ruby loved to sing. This important detail will be part of the solution! 3. Introduce the problem in your story. You don't have to explain every detail leading up to the problem. Notice that Ninovan mentioned Ruby didn't have money for food. This was the first problem that sent Ruby out on her journey, which lead to an even bigger problem! Problems like being too curious, not following directions, or a character feeling nervous or lonely can be introduced in the first paragraph and then expanded upon in the middle of the story. Paragraph 2: The Middle (4-5 sentences) 1. Describe the main events in your story. Be sure to really describe how the problem develops. 2. Include details on how the characters are feeling. Does the setting change? 3. Don't forget transition words! Paragraph 3: The End (3-4 sentences) 1. Describe the main events that lead to the ending. 2. Be sure to describe how the problem was solved. 3. You can add an extra detail at the end that wraps up the action. For Ninovan's draft I would recommend that he writes one more sentence about how Ruby made it back home to her grandmother.

After you write your draft, you will edit and revise with your Learning Guide. I should see writing on the paper with suggestions for spelling, punctuation, word choice, etc.
Next is the final draft!

Narrative Writing 5.05

The last step is your final draft. You will use the rough draft that you edited with your learning guide and rewrite the story with your best handwriting. Be sure to indent the first sentence of your first paragraph. Don't forget to move to the next line and indent when you are starting your middle and final paragraphs. I should be able to see three distinct paragraphs. I am grading handwriting, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure. Take your time and show me your best! If you cannot fit your story on two pages, print an extra copy of page two like Ninovan did!
