Meaningful Text Selection
"Becoming fearless isint the point, That's impossible, It's learning how to control your fear and how to be free from it." This is a meaningful line in Divergent as it relates both the character development of Tris, and to the reader, fear is a human experience felt by all. This quote states how one can't just become fearless but how one can control and live with their fears. This line is represents what Tris does throughout the book.
introduction here
Ethos
The colors of the backround have meaning. The colors grey, black, and blue are blended together to show the three factions that Tris could fit into. The grey what she once was, the main color black what she is now, and the blue what she could have become, but the blend of colors is also meant to represent that though she could have joined any faction the traces of the others will still remain inside her.
PAthos
LOGOS
PATHOS
Pathos is used throughout the text to make sure the reader does not froget human effect on others, but to also show how one must live a life that makes them happy, everyone deserves an equal chance at living, and choosing to live a life of sadness for the benefit of others is not necessarily correct either. This is stated in the book Divergent through the quote "It's Caleb's turn to make dinner tonight. Who will take his place my-mother or my father... I close my eyes and picture my mother and my father sitting at the dinner table in silence. It is a lingering hint of selflessness that makes my throat tight at the sight of them. This quote shows the deep connections of human emotion, and how we should care for and respect others, but also brings up the point that we need to respect oursevelves as well. We can choose our own path in life while also respecting that of others.
ETHOS
The way Ethos is shown in Divergent is through the main character of the story Tris, the story is told in the first person prespective of Tris, and throught the story readers are able to hear her thoughts and opinions, she is created to be relatable person so that the reader can identify and feel that she is a person of trust with a similar opinion worth listening too. Even if she is just a tool for the Author Veronica Ross, during one point in the story when Tris is comparing her old life, her old self, with her new one she states "I think of climbing the stairs with the abegnation our feet finding the same rythm, all of the same, this isin't like that. We are not of the same, but we are somehow one" This quote states how Tris has mentally battled her emotions, and how she was once mindlessly going through life as expected of her by others, now she is going her own route, she is not the same as she once was she has a new life, yet she is still the same person, she is still that person who once mindlessely lived in society but now she is the new one that took a step forward into the world.
Imagery
Verious examples of well written imagery can be found throught the text of Divergent. But one good example comes from the quote "The glass panel of the window is cracked like a frozen spiderweb." This imagery is good as it creates a vivid idea within the readers mind of the appearance of the window mentioned in the text, most everyone has seen broken glass in their lifetime, and most know cracked glass often looks like a spider web, further adding the statment of frozen in place creates the imagery within ones head of a window cracked in the pattern of a spiders web but not yet shattered, as if frozen in time just as wanted by the text.
LOGOS
Logos is used throught the story of divergent to state the pure facts, and allow readers to make connnections between statments brining together a greater common idea. Throught the book the main charecter Tris often states her opinion about her life and her faction, at the start of the book she states how she does not fit in within Abegnation, and while not specificly stating unhappiness does not feel as if she is in the right place. But as the story progresses she starts stating how she feels she fits in with her new faction the Duantless and how it makes her happy to do so. This can be connected with the quote "Beatrice he says, looking sternly into my eyes. We should think of our family..." "but we must also think of ourselves" This quote shows while when going through life it is important to aknolwedge and help others, it is further important to make sure one can first help oneself. Just as instead of Tris staying in Abegnation and living a boring life, she takes the step foward to live life on her own terms and be dauntless.
The Dauntless logo
This image represents the logo of the Dauntless faction, this is important beacuse the dauntless faction is where Tris finally starts fitting in, where she stops experiencing the feeling of being out of place and starts truly enjoying her life.
Three birds Tattoo
Not long after Tris joins the faction of the Duantless she gets a tattoo of three birds, these birds represent each of the family members she left behind when choosing her path in life, even though she has chosen a new path in life she dosen't want to froget where she came from.
TONE
The Ross's tone shifts throughout the story, but when bringing up the topic of overcoming one's fears and insecurities, to allow the ability to follow ones true path Ross takes on a Candid and Earnest tone,
- Candid Tone
- Earnest Tone
The choosing cermony
This image is important beacuse it shows a pivotal point in the story from this point on Tris changes her throught process she pursues her life and happiness regardless of others. But as an important mention the choosing cermony and choosing a bowl represents ones internal struggles about choosing a path in life, and how it may be difficult to choose one right for you but that it is important to follow one of your own choice and noth others.
