Later on the mountain only represents despair and savagery because of the unorthodox murder and loss of civilization among the group.

The start of the book presents the mountain as a symbol of hope and refuge due to its enormity and higher chance of being seen by passing ships.

The Mountain

eventually could be seen as nothing more than a sinking boat because the boys destroyed everything so it was going nowhere and they were not getting rescued.

The island takes up the shape of a boat which ironically was the thing the boys needed for rescue. It symbolized hope and prosperity early on.
