REPORTED SPEECH

It is used when someone repeats someone else's words some time later. You need to make several changes such as subjects, verbs, and time expressions as the context and the time have changed. IT IS A STEP BACK IN TIME.

Direct Speech: Present Simple 'He apologises for everything'

Reported Speech (Past Simple): He said that he apologised for everything

Direct Speech: Present Cont. 'He is always apologising for everything'

Reported Speech (Past Cont.): He said that he was always apologising for everything

Direct Speech: Past Simple 'He apologised for everything'

Reported Speech (Past Perfect Simple): He said that he had apologised for everything

Direct Speech: Past Cont. 'He was apologising for everything'

Reported Speech (Past Perfect Cont.) He said that he had been apologising for everything

Direct Speech: Present Perfect Simple: 'He has apologised for everything'

Reported Speech (Past Perfect Simple): He said that he had apologised for everything

5. With verbs 'suggest' or 'recommend': Verb + ing/that clause
