The fantasy
There are three points that characterize the fantasy :
- Take place in an imaginary world /made-up world
- Out of the realm of possibility
- Unrealistic, improbable and magic elements
- Often there is a quest
Alice in Wonderland
- Alice in wonderland is a novel writed by Lewis Caroll and published in 1865.
- Alice is a little girl dozing in a field and suddenly a rabbit runs past her. She sets off in pursuit. It's the start of an incredible adventure, leading to many surprising meetings.
1- Talking animals, in an other world, magical events, a cat can vanish 2- The pig was a human baby before its transformaton 3- This word is repeaated approximately 11 times. It's ironic and also comical because the situation is crazy for Alice and on top of that for the reader. The cat thinks Alice is mad because she's curious and seems confused and lost
We had to answer three questions on an extract of the piece : 1- Can you find any elements of fantasy? Wich ones? 2- What was the pig before it was a pig. 3- How many times is the word "mad" repeated? Why is the use of this word ironic in this specific conveersation?
My opinion
I didn't particularly like this part of the chapter because I've never been a fan of Alice in Wonderland, either in the film or the book. I'm not sure what bothered or displeased me. I guess when I was a kid and I saw it for the first time there was a scene where I got scared and I dind't like be scared, so that's probably why I hate it.
Jumanji
Judy and Peter, two young children alone at home, don't know what to do, so they decide to go to the park. Then, at the foot of a tree, they find a game with unusual rules: Jumanji. The two young heroes of this adventure are transported into a fantastic universe. Where the city is suddenly invaded by animals such as lions, monkeys, rhinoceroses and snakes, who escape from the game.
On this text we had to explain how Peter's opinion of the game has changed from the beginning to the end :
-At the beginning, Peter is totally uninterested by the game. However, at the end , Peter chages his mind. He's extremely terrified by the game because when he moved a piece a lion appeared out of nowhere
My opinion
I particularly liked this part of the chapter since I thought I'd seen all the jumanji and I didn't know this beginning with these two kids playing this board game. I also liked the moment when the lion suddenly appears out of nowhere - it comes without warning, you don't expect it.
The lord of rings
Frodo Baggins inherits a magic ring. Although it appears to be a simple jewel, it is in reality a devastating instrument of power that will enable Sauron, the Dark Lord, to rule over Middle-earth. With the help of the Fellowship of the Ring, a group of eight companions from different kingdoms, Frodo must reach Mount Doom to destroy it.
-We did analysis of an excerpt : " The coucil of elround" -And we did a role play where we embody the characters
My opinion
I liked this part of the chapter because I didn't seen it for a long time. It was good to see this scene again because I didn't remember it and it made me think of other scenes I forgot. I thought it was funny to do this kind of theater, it made the course much more lively and we understood better how the scene unfolded with every characters.
My experience
Stranger Things :
When a young boy disappears, a small town discovers a mysterious case, secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces... and a little girl...
I saw different fantasy movie or series but the two I really appreciate, it's stranger things from Matt and Ross Duffer, then there is Fantastic Beasts from J. K. Rowling :
Fantastic Beasts :
The story of Fantastic Beasts takes place between the two world wars, in a world where wizards and non-wizards live together. But these non-wizards are ignorant of the existence of a magical world.
I think these are good documents for this chapter because we've essentially seen works where the scene takes place directly in another world (except for Alice in Wonderland), and I find it interesting to see how fantasy can be introduced with certain elements. Both Alice in Wonderland and Fantastic Animals begin in the real world, in the world we live in.
And then there are elements that are out of the ordinary make us realize that we're changing universes, so these two works add up nicely. If you want to be scared, you can mix Stranger Things with Jumanji, because both are about children who have a quest and to solve a problem. I think Stranger Things can make a good link with the Gothic chapter.
Even if by the end of this chapter I was getting a bit bored with the theme because I found it a bit long and I like when there's a change.
The chapter
At first I had no idea what we were going to do in this subject because it's new for us to be in première and in this subject, I was quite surprised (in the good way). I thought we were just going to studying books all year, but it's actually rather diversified, with films, videos, pictures, comics.... .
THANKS!
