ONCE UPON A TIME...

There was a man named John B Watson who wrote, "Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It" was published in 1913 (often called Behavior Manefesto). He was American so he is often considered the founder of behaviorism. Ivan Pavlov was a Russian psychologist whose practice and research started roughly in the 1890s. He was the discorver of classical conditioning.

So Unfair Man... Sure ain't doing that again.

Human Nature

"Give me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed, and my own specified world to bring them up in, and I'll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select—doctor, lawyer, artist, merchant-chief, and, yes, even beggar-man and thief, regardless of his talents, penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations, and race of his ancestors."

(Watson, 1913)

Source of Dysfunction: Maladaptive Behaviors!

04

The healing process is all about changing the maladaptive behaviors that are impacting the client's life and influencing their symptom severity. The role of the counselor is as a teacher and researcher working with the client in collaboration towards a goal. Clients need willing participants who can do their own self-research outside of sessions for the attainment of their goals.

Timeline

Not So Long Ago

City of Today

A Long Time Ago

Mid-20th century Skinner developed operant conditioning, reinforcement experiments, and shaping behavior. Then Bandura brought in social learning theory, and then some cognitive-behavioral stuff started happening.

Now we advance the feild with behavioral neuroscience studies, neural bases of beahvior and interplays between biology and enviorment factors are highlited.

Early 20th century the feild emerged from methods of structuralism and functionalism thanks to Watson's study of observable behavior.

Multicultural Considerations

When implementing behavior therapeutic techniques it is vital a therapist consider the multicultural facets of the client's demographic and personal lens. Behavior therapy involves the shaping of behaviors to suit the larger society, so not considering behaviors used healthy or to survive in their current environment when finding displacements could jeopardize the client.
