UNINTENTIONAL
INJURIES EXAMPLES
Intentional injuries often involve a premeditated purpose to one's self or another person.
Unintentional injuries are accidents that are not premeditated and are unexpected.
INTENTIONAL
SEXUAL BEHAVIORS
Sexual Behaviors range from different ages, but 46% of students admitted to having sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse increases the chance of obtaining a sexually transmitted disease (STD), which is a disease that is spread through a sexual encounter with someone that already is infected. Human Immunodeficiency Virus, also known as HIV, is a disease that attacks the body's immune system and can develop AIDS. Some other exmaples of STDs are:
When students are actively engaged in sexual behaviors, this also increases their chances of getting pregnant. THe majority of teen pregnancies occur unexpectedly, so there typically is little to no prenatal care provided.
Alcohol & Other Drug Use
Alcohol is considered a drug as it interrupts pathways resulting in improper functionality of the brain. Students are exposed to alcohol, on average, at the age of 12 - 13 years old. When students are exposed, they are more likely to smoke marjiuana and other drugs. Some examples of other drugs are:
- fentanyl
- methanphetamines
- cocaine
- LSD
- heroin
Insufficient Physical Activity
Physical Activity can be described as movement within the body to keep our brains and overall helth active. The more we include physical activity within the classrooms and a student's overall life, we are keeping the mind stimulated while also developing healthy habits. One way to add physical activity within a regular classroom is by implementing brain breaks. Giving our students a few minutes every few hours to redirect their attention and expend the built-up energy, we are going to be better results within our student's learning.
Dietary Patterns
With how much of our food is processed in today's market, students are at a high risk of having developing poor eating habits. Not only is most of our foods processed, but even fast food joints lack nutrient values that are needed for our bodies. For example, a McDonald's Big Mac is 590 calories and is made up of 25 grams of fat. If our studens are to eat those every day, the fat will create build up within our arteries resulting in a chronic disease. When students develop poor eating habits, they may become overweight, not provide enough nutrients for the body, or develop self-esteem issues. Teaching students proper eating habits, as well as healthy eating habits is going to benefit our students physically, mentally, and emotionally.
MyPlate is a great resources to use to teach healthy eating habits to students at any grade level. With proper teaching, we can create dietary patterns for our students to fuel their bodies.
