Ancien Régime
The ancien régime was the political, social and economic system in force in Europe in the 18th century. It was characterised by a state society, an agrarian economy and absolute monarchy as a form of government.

CHARACTERISTICS
Economy
The economy of the Ancien Régime was basically an agrarian economy since 80% of the population was dedicated to the primary sector, i.e. they lived in and from the countryside. However, agriculture was not very productive, mainly due to technological deficiencies.
The society
Eighteenth-century society tended to be aristocratic . the members of the aristocracy by birth, wealth or legal status exercised enormous influence over the lives of others (common people). Ancien Régime society was composed of three estates: the Church, the Nobility and the common people.The Church and the nobility had privileges and the common people had duties and rights.
Political System
The political system of the Ancien Régime was absolute monarchy by divine right. The monarch possessed absolute power by concentrating all powers in his person. He ruled the kingdom and directed foreign policy, dictated the laws and administered justice or appointed the magistrates who exercised it in his name. The absolute monarch was not subject to any kind of control and did not share sovereignty and the power, with anyone.

What are the main differences between the ancien régime and today's society?
- The system of government is now democratic, that is, it is chosen by the entire population over the age of 18, regardless of gender, whereas in the old regime it was based on a monarchy, only a group of people could be king according to their birth and only if they were men. - Education is now free and everyone who wants to can have access to it and not only for people from the high society, as it was in the old regime. - In the ancien régime, the social classes were very differentiated and some were not treated the same as others, today the social classes are not so differentiated and all are treated equally, regardless of the purchasing power they have and what they do for a living. - Today everyone has rights and privileges, in the old regime only the nobility and the clergy had privileges, the common people were not entitled to them because they were of a different social class.

In my opinion I think that society has made a big change for the better for all people and that everything is fairer, for example democracy and totally free education. Today's society is much better than the old regime because of the great change.
