Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created in 1887 by the British writer Arthur Conan Doyle. He is a late 19th century English character noted for his intelligence, his skilful use of observation and deductive reasoning to solve difficult cases.

The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his companion Watson, known collectively as the "Holmesian canon", consists of four novels and fifty-six stories collected in several volumes.

Arthur Conan Doyle

Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician of Irish descent, the creator of the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. He was a prolific author whose work includes science fiction, historical novels, plays and poetry.

Charles Doyle would illustrate the first edition of his son's book, Study in Scarlet (1887), the first to feature Sherlock Holmes. Throughout his life he suffered from severe alcoholism and deep depression, which led him to be institutionalised on several occasions.
