BREXIT: YES OR NO?

Let's talk about it

start

The Vote

On 23rd June 2016, the majority of voters in Britain voted to leave the European Union.

VS

Proponents of leaving emphasize regaining sovereignty, immigration control, financial contributions, and the opportunity for independent trade policies as key reasons for Brexit.

Supporters of remaining in the EU cite economic stability, security, international influence, and the protection of citizens' rights as reasons to stay.

But first things first...

What is Brexit?

  • Brexit is a portmanteau of "British" and "exit" and refers to the United Kingdom's (UK) decision to leave the European Union (EU).
  • In 2016, voters in the UK were asked to vote to remain or leave the European Union. This kind of vote is called a referendum.

A bit of history

David Cameron

This referendum was proposed and organized by the UK government, led by then-Prime Minister David Cameron, who promised it as part of his party's election campaign in 2015. After the referendum, Cameron resigned because he supported ‘remain’.

Theresa May

Theresa May became the new Prime Minister. She played a significant role in the activation of Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union, which initiated the Brexit process. She activated Article 50 in March 2017. This marked the official start of the two-year negotiation period.

Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson played a significant role in the later stages of the Brexit process, renegotiating the Withdrawal Agreement with the European Union and overseeing the UK's formal departure from the EU on January 31, 2020.

During the transition period, which ended on December 31, 2020, the United Kingdom and the European Union negotiated the terms of their future relationship.
