Gandhi was born in 1869 in western India. When he was just 13 years old, he married his wife Kasturba Makanji, who was also a teen. It was an arranged marriage. The two had five children together. Because India was part of the British Empire and Gandhi's family had money, he was able to move to England and study
to become a lawyer. One of the first major jobs he was offered was in South Africa; helping Indians who were taken there to work during the time of British Imperialism.
