Day 1 - Planning

Planning

  • What is a speech?
    • A speech is a special kind of writing that is all about your opinion and ideas.
  • What makes it special is that it read- aloud to share those ideas with others.

Planning

  • What type of writing is this?
    • A speech based on your opinion.
  • What information should I give?
    • An example of an injustice or something you think is unfair in your community or in the world.
  • What do I need to include?
    • Facts, details, evidence from resources, quotes, and visuals to support your opinion.
Click here to access the Classkick for this assignment.

Step one: Brainstorm a Topic

  • The first step in writing your speech is choosing a topic.
  • You may choose your own topic or on the next slide, there are some examples that you can choose from too.
  • Make sure to think of topics with a very strong opinion. Every topic needs reasons and supporting details to back it up.
  • Use pages 1 & 2 in the Classkick.

Possible topics:

You can choose your own topic or you can choose one of the examples. Use the Brainstorm Topics section to write down your ideas. Once you figure out which one you really want to do, circle it.
Choose 1 of the following Topics. Remember to use reasons and evidence to support your opinion and convince the reader about your viewpoints. Click the information button to see the example choices.

Step Two: Research

  • To develop your opinion about the topic you choose, you need to read information from several sources.
  • Think about this:
    • What do you want to convince your reader to believe in your speech?
  • Use the 2 links in the edio lesson from today to help you find 2 different resources you can use to:
    • Form and opinion
    • Identify facts and evidence that support your opinion.
  • Use page 2 of the Classkick.

Step Two: Reasons and Evidence

  • Now that you have chosen your topic, you can write your opinion statement that is supported with reasons and evidence.
  • We can use the OREO Method to help us develop an opinion essay.
    • O - Opinion
    • R - Reason
    • E - Evidence
    • 0 - Opinion Restated
  • Use page 1 of the Classkick.

What is the OREO Method?

Reasons and Evidence

Use your graphic organizer in the Classkick on page 1

Reasons: Tell your reader why you feel the way you do.

Evidence: Give examples from your research to support WHY you feel that way.

Note: You cannot expect people to agree with you just because you said so. You need good reasons to support your opinion.
