The History of the Dumbwaiter
The dark history behind the invention
What is it?
The dumbwaiter was a system of pullies used to raise and lower food and other items between floors of a house. It dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times Thomas Jefferson is credited with bringing the idea to the states after seeing a similar invention in france In the 1920's they became electric like an elevator.
The Darkside
When Thomas Jefferson started using the Dumbwaiter it was to avoid slaves from interupting his important dinner meetings. Jefferson did not want them overhearing him talk to his guests, and he wanted them out of sight when he was hosting abolitionists.
The first patent
The first patent on the dumbwaiter was given to George W. Cannon in 1887.
The dumbwaiter now
The dumbwaiter has been making a resurgence in recent years. Since 2016 many people have been adding dumbwaiters as a feature of their home again.
