"Bullying through the use of technology or any electronic communication, including without limitation any transfer of signs, signals, writing, images, sounds, data, or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole or in part by a wire, radio, electromagnetic system, photoelectronic system, or photooptical system, including without limitation electronic mail, Internet communications, instant messages, or facsimile communications" (Bullying Laws in Illinois, n.d., para. 5).

How will I know if someone is being bullied?
When an individual:
- Stops using their device to communicate with no apparant reasoning
- Seems to suddenly develops feelings of anxiety about using their device
- Develops feelings of anxiety or general fear of attending school
- After using social media, texting, gaming, becoming stressed,angry,frustrated or sad.
- Is oversleeping or not sleeping
- is spending much less time with family or friends than usual.
- begins to eat much more or much less than typically before.
- Seems to be regularly depressed
- makes statements in line with the meaningless of life or about suicide and seems to lose interest in things that they were previously interested in.
- Does not want to reveal online activities.
- Often requests to leave school due to illness.
- Starts to keep secrets that they would previously not especially about their social life or social media activity.

What are the harmful harmful effects of being bullied?
- Teens or young adults who experience bullying and/or cyberbullying are two times as likely to engage in self-harm and suicidal behavior.
- One in four students who experienced bullying turn to self-harm behaviors in order to cope.
- One in five students who have experienced cyberbullying have also reported to having skipped school in order to cope.

The Alarming Statistics in 2023
- 15 percent of students within the United States report being cyberbullied.
- 33 percent of youth across the globe experience bullying online.
- Children ages 9 to 10 are more likely to be bullied on gaming websites, while teens ages 13 to 16 are more likely to be affected by cyberbullying on social media.
- Foreign national students experience more cyberbullying than their locally-born counterparts.
- Girls are 1.3 times more likely to be cyberbullied than boys.
- 49 percent of LGBTQ+ students have experienced cyberbullying.
- 70 percent of students with a physical disability report being cyberbullied.
- Children within lower socioeconomic classes experience the most cases of bullying.
- 9 percent of young adults report people posting embarrassing pictures of them on social media sites without permission.

What can teachers and schools do?
- Make school a safe place.
- Build relationships with students so they are comfortable talking about thier issues.
- Make school a positive climate.
- Monitor, listen, and create a space where bullying is not okay.
- Improve students’ social and emotional skills by teaching social and emotional learning.
- Learn ways to respond to and enforce school policies against bullies.
- Involve parents and students in the schools.
- Form extra curricular activites that all students can get involved in.

Illinois Law
Public Act 098-0801 H.B. 4207 (signed by governor, Aug 1, 2014; took effect Jan 1, 2015) (Public Act 098-0801 ). “No student shall be subjected to bullying: … (4) through the transmission of information from a computer that is accessed at a nonschool-related location, activity, function, or program or from the use of technology or an electronic device that is not owned, leased, or used by a school district or school if the bullying causes a substantial disruption to the educational process or orderly operation of a school. This item (4) applies only in cases in which a school administrator or teacher receives a report that bullying through this means has occurred and does not require a district or school to staff or monitor any nonschool-related activity, function, or program.” (Illinois General Assembly - Full Text of Public Act 098-0801, n.d., para. 2)
