Many existing adaptations and accommodations were found to be inadequate, often providing only partial accessibility or inadvertently increasing social exclusion. The research concluded that Ontario schools are not fully accessible and emphasized the need for improved infrastructure and inclusive design to better support students with physical disabilities

Call to Action Educators, school leaders, and policymakers must prioritize equitable access for all students by committing to universal design and barrier-free infrastructure in schools. The findings from this Ontario-based study make it clear, our current systems are not meeting the needs of students with mobility impairments.

Born in Ghana, West Africa, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most people—but not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams. As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age thirteen to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing four hundred miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message: disability is not inability. Today, Emmanuel continues to work on behalf of the disabled.

The Story of Disability Rights Activist udith Heumann

A powerful picture book biography honouring disability rights icon Judith Heumann, this story highlights her lifelong fight for inclusion and equality - most notably her leadership during the historic 504 Sit-in of 1977.

The Author

The Author

From childhood, Judy Heumann was told “no” - no to public school, no to a teaching license - simply because she used a wheelchair. Refusing to accept those barriers, Judy became a driving force in the disability rights movement. In the 1970s, when the government stalled on signing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Judy and fellow activists staged a groundbreaking sit-in that helped secure legal protections for people with disabilities. Section 504 became a cornerstone for future legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and laid the groundwork for educational frameworks like Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which aim to remove barriers and create more inclusive learning environments. With a personal reflection from Judy herself, this book introduces young readers to a fearless advocate whose work continues to shape accessibility, education, and equity today.
